Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer Dyes with Dual-State Emission Properties: Concept, Examples and Applications

Timothee Stoerkler et al.

Summary: Dual-state emissive (DSE) fluorophores are organic dyes that can emit fluorescence in both dilute and concentrated solution and in the solid-state. This review focuses on the utilization of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) fluorescence to optimize the properties of DSE dyes. The synergistic approach between organic synthesis, fluorescence spectroscopy, and ab initio calculations plays a crucial role in the construction and optimization of DSE-ESIPT fluorophores.

One F atom matters: synthesis, aggregation-induced emission and stimuli-responsiveness of three isomers of fluoro/formyl substituted tetraphenylethene derivatives

Tianrui Li et al.

Summary: By introducing fluorine atom(s) into Luminescent organic compounds, their packing structure and Luminescence properties can be fine-tuned. This study synthesized three isomers of fluoro/formyl substituted tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivatives with one fluorine atom via Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions, and found that these compounds exhibit different Luminescence behavior and responsiveness towards mechanical force and heat compared to non-fluorinated analogs. The resulting composites also show potential in fluorescent thermometers and anti-counterfeiting.

Thermodynamic equilibrium between locally excited and charge-transfer states through thermally activated charge transfer in 1-(pyren-2′-yl)-o-carborane

Lei Ji et al.

Summary: Reversible conversion between excited states is crucial in various photophysical phenomena. By conducting experiments and calculations, we discovered that the energy gaps and barriers among the locally-excited and charge-transfer states in 1-(pyren-2'-yl)-o-carborane are negligible, making all three states accessible at room temperature. Furthermore, the internal-conversion and reverse internal-conversion processes occur much faster than radiative decay, resulting in the same lifetimes and thermodynamic equilibrium of the two states.

Mechanochromic luminogens with hypsochromically shifted emission switching property: recent advances and perspectives

Faizal Khan et al.

Summary: Mechanoresponsive luminescent materials have the ability to change their emission in response to mechanical stimuli. Most materials show red-shifted emission, while blue-shifted emission materials are rare. This review focuses on recently developed luminescent materials that exhibit hypsochromic emission in response to mechanical stimuli and discusses the mechanisms behind it.
