Improving self-motion perception and balance through roll tilt perceptual training

Andrew R. Wagner et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to determine if a vestibular perceptual learning intervention could improve roll tilt self-motion perception and balance performance. The results showed that roll tilt perceptual thresholds and quiet stance postural sway can be significantly improved after less than 5 hours of roll tilt perceptual training.

The Effect of Noisy Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation on Learning of Functional Mobility and Manual Control Nulling Sensorimotor Tasks

Esther J. Putman et al.

Summary: Research suggests that Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) can significantly improve the learning of functional mobility tasks, with learning effects being retained even after GVS application is stopped. However, similar learning improvements were not observed in manual control tasks. High-level GVS appears to have some inhibitory effects on the learning ability of both tasks, but the effects are not significant.

The role of vestibular cues in postural sway

Faisal Karmali et al.

Summary: The study found a strong positive relationship between postural control and vestibular encoding of lateral translation, supporting the hypothesis that vestibular noise contributes to spontaneous postural sway. Specifically, lateral translation was found to explain more variation in postural sway when proprioceptive cues were altered, suggesting a greater dependence on vestibular noise for balance in such conditions. These results have potential implications for vestibular implants, balance prostheses, and physical therapy exercises.

Perceptual-motor styles

Pierre-Paul Vidal et al.

Summary: Even in a stereotyped task, sensorimotor behavior can be variable due to noise, redundancy, adaptability, learning or plasticity. The sources and significance of behavioral variability have attracted attention, but the idea that individual strategies play a role in this variability has been explored to a lesser extent. The concept of style in sensorimotor behavior has not been thoroughly studied, but it may contribute to personalized physiology and medicine.

Auditory noise improves balance control by cross-modal stochastic resonance

Junichiro Yashima et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that enhanced somatosensory function through applying auditory noise can improve static balance, particularly for participants with lower balance performance. Specifically, lower-balance participants showed a significant improvement in the auditory noise trials, while higher-balance participants did not exhibit a significant effect.

Summary: Galvanic vestibular white noise can improve visual thresholds but does not have an effect on auditory thresholds. Individuals with higher visual thresholds without stimulation showed greater improvement.

Impact of gravity on the perception of linear motion

Megan J. Kobel et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the nervous system does not universally compensate for the effects of gravity during translation, with the colinear effect of gravity significantly decreasing sensitivity to certain motions. Body orientation has an overall impact on perception, potentially reflecting the influence of gravity on self-motion perception.

The neural basis for violations of Weber's law in self-motion perception

Jerome Carriot et al.

Summary: Weber's law is considered a fundamental principle of perception, but it is an oversimplification with observed violations; perceptual performance exceeds predictions from Weber's law for higher stimulus amplitudes commonly found in natural sensory stimuli; the study reveals the neural basis for violations of Weber's law and how variability contributes to adaptive encoding of natural stimuli.

Statistical approaches to identifying lapses in psychometric response data

Torin K. Clark et al.

Summary: Psychometric curve fits relate physical stimuli to an observer's performance. In experiments, the impact of lapses on psychometric fit parameters can be reduced by using a lapse-rate model. A discrete lapse theory and lapse identification algorithm were developed to identify and discard outlier trials due to lapses, resulting in accurate threshold estimates across various lapse rates. The lapse-identification algorithm is recommended for experiments with fewer trials or unknown lapse rates, while lapse-rate model approaches are preferred for experiments with many trials or high known lapse rates.
