Air Pollution Is Associated with Cognitive Deterioration of Alzheimer's Disease

Feng Cheng Lin et al.

Summary: This study compared the cognitive deterioration of AD patients in cities with different levels of air pollution. Results showed that AD patients exposed to higher levels of CO, NO2, PM10, and SO2 in the highly polluted city (Kaohsiung) experienced faster cognitive deterioration compared to those in the less polluted city (Pingtung). The study suggests that high levels of air pollutants are associated with an increased risk of AD cognitive deterioration, with SO2 exposure having the greatest impact on cognitive decline.

Air pollution and neurological development in children

Sandie Ha

Summary: Pregnancy and early childhood are critical periods for neurological development, with environmental perturbations having long-lasting effects. Exposure to air pollution during these periods can lead to changes in brain structures and developmental disorders, emphasizing the importance of reducing pollution exposure.

The effect of weather, air pollution and seasonality on the number of patient visits for epileptic seizures: A population-based time-series study

Kuo-Liang Chiang et al.

Summary: This study explored the influences of seasonality, meteorological conditions, and air pollution exposure on the number of patients who visit the hospital due to seizures in Taiwan. Factors such as ambient temperature, CH4, and NO were found to have a significant impact on hospital visits. The study emphasized the necessity of rigorous monitoring and early warning of air pollutants and climate changes, and provided a basis for establishing prediction models for other countries or diseases.

Potential Impacts of Extreme Heat and Bushfires on Dementia

Taya L. Farugia et al.

Summary: Australia faces natural disasters and extreme weather conditions, with an increasing elderly population and limited research on their ability to cope with extreme heat and bushfires. Vulnerable communities, including those with dementia, are particularly at risk and there is a significant association between mental disorders and increased vulnerability to extreme heat. The paper explores the impact on individuals living with dementia in rural and metropolitan areas, recommending strategies for prevention and support services.

How climate change interacts with inequity to affect nutrition

Leah Salm et al.

Summary: Climate change significantly impacts nutritional status, with vulnerable populations being the most affected. Understanding the interaction between inequity and adverse nutrition outcomes in the face of increasing climate change pressures is a novel area of research. Studies highlight the importance of addressing equity as a fundamental component in climate change and nutrition research to ensure inclusive decision-making processes.

Anomalously warm weather and acute care visits in patients with multiple sclerosis: A retrospective study of privately insured individuals in the US

Holly Elser et al.

Summary: This study found that anomalously warm weather is associated with increased risk for emergency department and inpatient visits among individuals with multiple sclerosis, especially in older age groups. This association was similar for men and women, and exhibited substantial variation by season, region, and climate zone.
