Identification of a new orthonairovirus associated with human febrile illness in China

Jun Ma et al.

Summary: A new Orthonairovirus, Songling virus (SGLV), was identified in patients bitten by ticks in Heilongjiang Province, China. SGLV displayed similar features to other Orthonairoviruses and formed a unique clade within the Tamdy Orthonairovirus in the Nairoviridae family. Infection with SGLV caused symptoms like headache, fever, depression, fatigue, and dizziness in hospitalized patients, with 69% developing virus-specific antibodies in the acute phase, indicating its association with human febrile illness in China.

Human Tacheng Tick Virus 2 Infection, China, 2019

Zhihui Dong et al.

Summary: The study used metagenomic analysis to identify Tacheng tick virus 2 infection in a patient with a history of tick bite in northwestern China. The virus was confirmed through various methods including reverse transcription-PCR, virus isolation, and genomic analysis. Additionally, viral RNA was detected in 9.6% of ticks collected from the same region, highlighting the risk of tick-borne virus transmission in the area.
