Chalcogenides by Reduction of their Dioxides in Ultra-Alkaline Media

Ralf Albrecht et al.

Summary: The reaction of chalcogen dioxides with As2O3 in a high-temperature hydroflux solution resulted in the formation of potassium trichalcogenides crystals with dimensions up to 2 cm. The new heterochalcogenide anion was formed during the process. The reduced activity of water played a key role in the unexpected redox reaction and precipitation of hygroscopic compounds.

Predictive Synthesis

Kirill Kovnir

Summary: Current solid state synthesis involves a multidimensional space that is difficult to parametrize and predict, with challenges arising from the diversity of basic properties of elements and practical synthetic issues. Collaborative efforts in computational and experimental methods are needed to enhance predictability in solid state synthesis.

New Compounds and Phase Selection of Nickel Sulfides via Oxidation State Control in Molten Hydroxides

Xiuquan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that mixing molten salts can achieve precise control of the oxidation state of Ni, enabling the growth of single crystals of known ternary sulfides and accessing new phases. Additionally, by using the synthesized KNi4S2 as a template, a new layered compound Ni2S was obtained through deintercalation of K.

Novel synthesis approach for stubborn metals and metal oxides

William Nunn et al.

Summary: The study introduces a method for atomically precise synthesis of difficult-to-oxidize metal oxide thin films using solid metal-organic compounds, resulting in high-quality Pt and RuO2 films. The approach also demonstrates the feasibility for more complex materials, representing a significant progress in the synthesis science of stubborn materials.
