Indirect to direct band gap crossover in two-dimensional WS2(1-x)Se2x alloys

Cyrine Ernandes et al.

Summary: In transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, the transition from indirect to direct band gap occurs when the thickness drops to one monolayer, with different alloy compositions of WS2(1-x)Se2x significantly affecting this trend. The highest micro-PL intensity is found in bilayer WS2(1-x)Se2x (x = 0.8), with only a 2-fold decrease in its maximum value when transitioning from mono-layer to bi-layer. The high PL intensity in WS2(1-x)Se2x allows for the development of spectrally tunable light-emitting devices.

Strain and Spin-Orbit Coupling Engineering in Twisted WS2/Graphene Heterobilayer

Cyrine Ernandes et al.

Summary: Researchers investigated the band structure of WS2/graphene heterobilayer for various twist angles and found that strain quantitatively affects electronic features of WS2 monolayers, including the spin-orbit coupling strength. They demonstrated that the WS2 spin-orbit splitting can be tuned by strain, showing potential for controlling the band dispersion of van der Waals materials.

2D Monolayer of the 1T' Phase of Alloyed WSSe from Colloidal Synthesis

Ashkan Shahmanesh et al.

Summary: Researchers explored the colloidal growth of monolayers of WSSe alloy in their 1T' phase with reduced flake aggregation. They found that the electronic structure was weakly affected by alloy content and atomic ordering, with confirmation of the 1T' phase using μ-Raman spectroscopy and STEM. Simulations suggested contributions from both S and Se atoms in the Raman spectra, and electronic transport revealed a short coherence length in the defective flakes.

Multiferroicity of Non-Janus MXY (X = Se/S, Y = Te/Se) Monolayers with Giant In-Plane Ferroelectricity

Hafiz Ghulam Abbas et al.

Summary: Using first-principles calculation, it was found that non-Janus configurations of MSeTe monolayers are more stable and exhibit giant in-plane spontaneous electric polarization and spin splitting, making them potentially useful in miniaturized p-type spintronics. Additionally, these configurations show multiferroic behavior with ferroelectricity and ferroelasticity, especially under tensile strain, which could be utilized for manipulation of carrier spin and band gap in spintronics and optospintronics.

Strong in-plane anisotropy in the electronic properties of doped transition metal dichalcogenides exhibited in W1-xNbxS2

Siow Mean Loh et al.

Summary: The study investigates the electronic properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide materials with aliovalent doping, using Nb-doped WS2 as an example. Electronic structure calculations and conductivity calculations on realistic models show that a high level of anisotropy can be expected in properties, including conductivity. Predictions suggest in-plane conductivity anisotropy as high as 5:1, the highest observed in any TMDC system in the [Mo,W][S,Se](2) class.
