Metal nanoparticle arrays via a water-based lift-off scheme using a block copolymer template

Bjorn Landeke-Wilsmark et al.

Summary: Metal nanoparticles have unique properties and can be used in various applications. However, it is challenging to fabricate dense arrays of non-close-packed, surface-supported metal nanoparticles over large surfaces using conventional methods. In this study, a water-based lift-off scheme involving block copolymer self-assembly is investigated. The fabrication process involves the use of a three-layer lift-off stack and solvent-induced surface reconstruction to generate a nanoporous mask. After metal deposition, the mask and excess material are easily removed by dissolving a sacrificial layer in water. This method offers a cost-effective and efficient way to generate well-ordered arrays of metal nanoparticles.

Visible wavelength spectral tuning of absorption and circular dichroism of DNA-assembled Au/Ag core-shell nanorod assemblies

Mihir Dass et al.

Summary: Gold-silver core-shell nanorods exhibit tunable plasmonic response over the visible spectrum by varying the thickness of the silver shell. The chiral arrangement of these nanorods, achieved through DNA origami design, enables the transfer of tunable plasmon resonance frequencies into circular dichroism signals covering a wide spectral range from 400 nm to 700 nm. This approach could have significant implications for the development of better sensors and metamaterials with tunable optical response in the visible region.

Block copolymer thin films

Changhang Huang et al.

Summary: Block copolymers (BCPs) are a special type of polymeric system with chemically distinct homopolymer blocks tethered together, used in bulk and thin film forms for nanotechnology applications. Progress in tailoring mesoscopic and nanoscopic structures of BCP thin films using external fields relies on precise control of structural orientation, local alignment, and long-range ordering, with conventional polymer field theory and numerical solution schemes playing a key role. Experimental and theoretical insights into the next generation of strategies for obtaining desired BCP thin film patterns and their industrial applications are also provided.

Quantum Light Emission from Coupled Defect States in DNA-Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes

Yu Zheng et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates promising single-photon emission from quantum defects generated in single-wall carbon nanotubes by covalent reaction with guanine nucleotides in their single-stranded DNA coatings. The spatial pattern of nanotube functionalization sites can be readily controlled by selecting ssDNA base sequences, making GF-SWCNTs a versatile family of quantum light emitters with engineered properties. Exciton traps from adjacent ssDNA strands are weakly coupled to give cross-correlations between their separate photon emissions.

Film Thickness and Composition Effects in Symmetric Ternary Block Copolymer/Homopolymer Blend Films: Domain Spacing and Orientation

Kristof Toth et al.

Summary: The study investigates the dependence of domain spacing in thin film blends of a lamellar polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymer on thickness and homopolymer molar mass variations. The addition of homopolymers influences domain spacings, with thicker films and different homopolymer compositions leading to changes in lamellae orientation. Molecular simulations suggest that these effects are driven by homopolymer segregation to film surfaces.
