High activity and stability in Ni2P/(Co,Ni)OOH heterointerface with a multiple-hierarchy structure for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

LiLi Zhang et al.

Summary: By using a facile two-step method, a Ni2P/(Co,Ni)OOH heterointerface with a three-level hierarchy morphology is prepared. The multiple levels of hierarchy structures provide a large area for active sites loading and facilitate substance transportation, contributing to enhanced HER activity. The strong charge transfer at the heterointerface eliminates spin asymmetry and achieves the thermos-neutral adsorption of active H species, further improving the catalytic performance. Density functional theory (DFT) and in-situ Raman measurements confirm the presence of sufficient Ni atoms as active sites. The Ni2P/(Co,Ni)OOH exhibits much better HER activity compared to separate Ni2P or (Co,Ni)OOH, achieving a high current density at a relatively low overpotential and a small Tafel slope in alkaline electrolyte. This work provides inspiration for optimizing HER activity using multiple-level hierarchy structures.

Regulations of active moiety in single atom catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction

Peng Zhu et al.

Summary: Hydrogen production from water splitting using renewable electric energy is a key topic for achieving a carbon neutral future. Single atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as a new frontier in catalysis, particularly in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), due to their high activity and excellent chemical selectivity. However, the influence of the neighboring coordinated atoms from the supports is often neglected in the classification of SACs. This review proposes a new classification method based on the type of supports and highlights the importance of the metal-support interaction and coordination environment. Structural designing strategies are also proposed to address the current challenges in SACs for HER.

Simultaneously Crafting Single-Atomic Fe Sites and Graphitic Layer-Wrapped Fe3C Nanoparticles Encapsulated within Mesoporous Carbon Tubes for Oxygen Reduction

Xun Cui et al.

Summary: A simple and robust approach was employed to synthesize one-dimensional hollow tubular carbon-based materials with highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction performance. By simultaneously crafting single-atomic Fe sites and graphitic layer-wrapped Fe3C nanoparticles, the Fe-N-doped hollow mesoporous carbon tubes were successfully prepared and used as the ORR electrocatalyst. The impressive ORR performances of the Fe-N-HMCTs are attributed to the favorable configuration of active sites in conjunction with the advantageous 1D hollow tubular architecture.

Summary: Transition metal hydroxides and their heterostructures have been identified as highly active electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline water electrolysis. The lattice hydroxide anions in metal hydroxides enhance the catalytic activity, but their poor electronic conductivity has been a concern. Advancements in heterostructured hydroxide materials with metallic and/or semiconducting phases have overcome this limitation, making them essential for energy-efficient alkaline HER.
