Using Machine Learning to make nanomaterials sustainable

Janeck J. Scott-Fordsmand et al.

Summary: Sustainable development is crucial for human survival, and Machine Learning (ML) can play a significant role in supporting more sustainable development by assisting in the Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) process. ML can be used in various steps of ERA, but there is a lack of guidance and standards for its implementation. To effectively utilize ML in ERA, a strategy should be developed with a focus on data foundations, methodologies, and addressing uncertainties. Historical errors and biases should be acknowledged to prevent their incorporation into ML programming.

Angela L. Caipa Garcia et al.

Summary: Advances in three-dimensional cell culture technology have allowed the development of organoids, which have proven useful for studying organ development, disease, toxicology, and drug screening. Organoids derived from pluripotent stem cells have greater complexity compared to those derived from adult stem cells. These organoids have been beneficial for pre-clinical testing of personalized treatments and in developing large toxicity and efficacy screens. They have also shown promise in environmental and genetic toxicology studies, providing responses similar to those observed in primary tissues and in vivo models.

Multiomics assessment in Enchytraeus crypticus exposed to Ag nanomaterials (Ag NM300K) and ions (AgNO3) - Metabolomics, proteomics (& transcriptomics)

Vera L. Maria et al.

Summary: Silver nanomaterials are widely used and studied, and in this study, the differential impact of AgNM300K and AgNO3 on protein and metabolite expression in Enchytraeus crypticus was assessed using high-throughput techniques. Results showed that the two materials elicited different responses in biological pathways, with AgNO3 causing a dose response increase of proteins/metabolites and NM300K causing more upregulation at lower concentrations. This study contributes to understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of silver nanomaterials on organisms.
