Surface roughness noise analysis and comprehensive noise effects on depth-dependent coherence time of NV centers in diamond

P. Chrostoski et al.

Summary: Noise in diamond, particularly caused by surface roughness, is detrimental to nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers and affects their coherence time. This study investigates the noise sources from diamond surface charge density fluctuations and incoherent photon scattering. The results show that surface charge density noise is the dominant factor, and the effects of photon scattering and bulk magnetic field noise are weak. Factors such as NV depth and surface termination have impact on the noise contributions. The calculated values of coherence time and signal-to-noise ratio are consistent with experimental findings.

Quantum Oscillations in Two-Dimensional Insulators Induced by Graphite Gates

Jiacheng Zhu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a mechanism for magnetoresistance oscillations in insulating states of 2D materials, showing that the oscillations are correlated with the high-density Fermi surface and due to the oscillatory behavior of graphite density of states. This unified mechanism for quantum oscillations in graphite-gated 2D insulators is based on electrostatic sample-gate coupling.

Electric-field noise in a high-temperature superconducting surface ion trap

P. C. Holz et al.

Summary: In this study, experiments with a YBCO high-temperature superconductor surface ion trap were conducted to explore new trap materials for trapped-ion quantum computers. The research revealed negligible voltage noise from superconducting electrode leads within the sensitivity of the setup and investigated the frequency and temperature dependence of electric-field noise above a YBCO surface. The findings suggest a connection between the dominant noise and the YBCO trap material, excluding the YBCO bulk as the origin of the noise. Further experiments are recommended to distinguish between noise screening within the superconducting phase and surface noise activated by the YBCO bulk through an unknown mechanism.
