Stoichiometry design in hierarchical CoNiFe phosphide for highly efficient water oxidation

Jiangbo Chen et al.

Summary: The rational composition design of trimetallic phosphide catalysts is crucial for enhancing surface reactions and improving catalytic performance. In this study, hierarchical CoxNiyFezP catalysts with precise control of stoichiometric metallic elements were synthesized. Among them, Co1.3Ni0.5Fe0.2P showed the most optimal composition, exhibiting remarkable catalytic activity and long-term stability for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). It was found that the surface phosphorus in Co1.3Ni0.5Fe0.2P was replaced by oxygen under the OER process. Density functional theory calculations before and after long-term stability tests revealed an increase in the density of states near the Fermi level of Co1.3Ni0.5Fe0.2P/Co1.3Ni0.5Fe0.2O, which could enhance the adsorption of OH- and improve the OER performance of the catalyst.
