Phosphoric acid assisted synthesis of fluorescent carbon dots from waste biomass for detection of Cr(VI) in aqueous media

Juri Goswami et al.

Summary: A green and facile method for synthesizing carbon dots (CDs) using lignocellulosic biomass (banana stem) and phosphoric acid has been developed. The CDs were used to construct a fluorescent sensor for detecting Cr(VI). The fluorescence behavior of the CDs was investigated in detail, and their optical and structural properties were determined. The prepared CDs exhibited excellent fluorescence properties and could detect Cr(VI) at low concentrations. They were successfully applied to quantitatively detect Cr(VI) in real water samples.

Tuning optical properties of nitrogen-doped carbon dots through fluorescence resonance energy transfer using Rhodamine B for the ratiometric sensing of mercury ions

A. Muthurasu et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-doped carbon dots prepared with Rhodamine B as a donor molecule showed emission color tuning from blue to red, utilized for ratiometric sensing of mercury ion. The photoluminescence properties of N-CDs were effectively quenched by Hg2+ ions, leading to the development of a cheap and selective sensing matrix for the detection of toxic metal ions such as mercury (Hg2+).
