Evolution of the Standard Genetic Code

Michael Yarus

Summary: The researcher computed paths to the Standard Genetic Code (SGC) and found that SGC-like coding emerged from traditional evolutionary mechanisms. They defined progress values to objectively measure evolution and discovered that SGC evolution is critically sensitive to disorder from random assignments, slowing down near coding completion.

Summary: The symbiotic relationship between lichen fungi and algae has been reevaluated in terms of ATP production, revealing that even though the ATP9 gene is lost in mitochondrial genomes, fungi can still produce ATP through nuclear genes.
