Barium stars as tracers of s-process nucleosynthesis in AGB stars I. 28 stars with independently derived AGB mass

B. Cseh et al.

Summary: This study compares the abundance patterns of Ba stars to AGB nucleosynthesis models and verifies the compatibility between AGB model mass and independently derived AGB mass. The results indicate that most Ba stars are contaminated by low-mass, non-rotating AGB stellar models, and some observed elemental abundances are higher than the predicted values. Some stars may have lower masses than independently determined.

Low-mass low-metallicity AGB stars as an efficient i-process site explaining CEMP-rs stars

D. Karinkuzhi et al.

Summary: The study proposes a more robust classification method for CEMP-s and CEMP-rs stars using heavy elements other than Ba and Eu. It suggests that the abundance patterns of CEMP-rs stars can be well explained by low-metallicity 1 M-circle dot models experiencing proton ingestion.

Spectroscopic study of CEMP-(s & r/s) stars: Revisiting classification criteria and formation scenarios, highlighting i-process nucleosynthesis

Partha Pratim Goswami et al.

Summary: The enhanced abundance of s- and r-process elements in a subclass of CEMP stars, known as CEMP-r/s stars, remains poorly understood. The i-process nucleosynthesis is suggested as a promising mechanism for the origin of these stars. By conducting a detailed systematic follow-up spectroscopic study, the researchers aim to better understand the chemical signatures and formation mechanisms of five potential CH star candidates.

Rubidium in Barium stars

M. P. Roriz et al.

Summary: Barium (Ba) stars show atmospheric signs of the slow neutron-capture mechanism from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, with rubidium (Rb) playing a key role in the s-process diagnostic. The study of 180 Ba stars reveals that Rb abundances are consistent with s-process models from low-mass AGB stars, indicating the main neutron source is the C-13(alpha,n)O-16 reaction in the companions of these Ba stars. Former IR/OH massive AGB star companions were not found in this study.

Rubidium abundances of galactic disk stars

Yoichi Takeda

Summary: The study used spectroscopic determinations of rubidium abundances to investigate the behavior of [Rb/Fe] ratio for disk stars in the metallicity range of -0.6 to +0.3. Results showed that the reliability of the abundances varied with stellar temperature, leading to the decision to focus on late-G and K stars at temperatures below 5500K. The study found that the [Rb/Fe] ratio gradually increases with decreasing metallicity, consistent with theoretical predictions of chemical evolution models.

Rubidium abundances in solar metallicity stars

C. Abia et al.

Summary: By analyzing the Rb and Zr abundances in KM-type giant stars, it was found that there is a Rb deficiency in giant stars, but once NLTE corrections are performed, the ratios are very close to solar values. This contrasts with the Rb deficiency found in M dwarfs, indicating potential differences in nucleosynthesis mechanisms for different types of stars.

Origin of the heaviest elements: The rapid neutron-capture process

John J. Cowan et al.

Summary: The rapid neutron-capture process (r-process) is responsible for about half of the heavy elements found in nature, but uncertainties and open questions remain. Studies suggest that the production of the majority of heavy r-process elements may be associated with neutron-rich conditions, such as neutron star mergers.

Heavy elements in barium stars

M. P. Roriz et al.

Summary: A new study presents elemental abundances for neutron-capture elements in 180 barium giant stars, revealing discrepancies in La abundances compared to previous literature. The data set shows an overabundance of neutron-capture elements in these stars, but behaves similarly to field stars in some aspects. While model predictions match observations in certain ratios, discrepancies are found in other ratios, requiring further investigation into neutron capture models.

The formation of barium giants via mass accretion in binary systems

Richard J. Stancliffe

Summary: We examine the composition of barium stars in the context of mass transfer from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion. Accretion of AGB ejecta onto low-mass companions forms typical 2.5M barium stars, with higher accretion masses required for lower mass companions. Our models fit observed properties of 74 barium giants, with most objects best fit with ejecta from 2.5M or 3M AGB stars. Accretion efficiency is towards the upper limit found in hydrodynamical simulations, with no strong correlations found between orbital period and accretion mass for the 18 stars with reported periods.
