The International Pulsar Timing Array second data release: Search for an isotropic gravitational wave background

J. Antoniadis et al.

Summary: In this study, we searched for an isotropic stochastic gravitational wave background using the second data release of the International Pulsar Timing Array. We found evidence for a spectrally similar low-frequency stochastic process and demonstrated that the combined international data set is more sensitive. Although no significant evidence of a gravitational-wave origin was found, future international data releases are expected to increase sensitivity and detection probability.

Gravitational-wave Statistics for Pulsar Timing Arrays: Examining Bias from Using a Finite Number of Pulsars

Aaron D. Johnson et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the bias in Bayesian upper limit recovery when using a subset of pulsars in pulsar timing array data sets, finding that it is more likely to recover lower upper limits when using a subset of pulsars. This conclusion is supported by experiments.

The MeerTime Pulsar Timing Array: A census of emission properties and timing potential

R. Spiewak et al.

Summary: MeerTime is a five-year survey project that aims to time pulsars with MeerKAT. Through an initial census of 189 pulsars visible to MeerKAT, we have obtained various parameters that provide important resources for population studies. Currently, MeerTime has made significant achievements and is of great significance for global efforts to detect the gravitational wave background.

Common-red-signal analysis with 24-yr high-precision timing of the European Pulsar Timing Array: inferences in the stochastic gravitational-wave background search

S. Chen et al.

Summary: This study searched for a stochastic gravitational-wave background (GWB) using data from six radio millisecond pulsars, finding spectral properties consistent with theoretical predictions but lacking the required HD correlation for GWB detection. The most favored model was found to be common uncorrelated red noise, with the results being marginally influenced by Solar system ephemeris effects.

Astrophysics Milestones for Pulsar Timing Array Gravitational-wave Detection

Nihan S. Pol et al.

Summary: The NANOGrav Collaboration has found strong Bayesian evidence for a common-spectrum stochastic process in their 12.5 yr pulsar timing array data set, with median characteristic strain amplitude at periods of a year. Even though evidence for the quadrupolar Hellings & Downs interpulsar correlations, which are characteristic of gravitational-wave signals, was not yet significant. By injecting a wide range of stochastic gravitational-wave background (GWB) signals into the data set, three key milestones were quantified, including the expectation of robust evidence for an interpulsar-correlated GWB signal after 15-17 yr of data accumulation.

On the Evidence for a Common-spectrum Process in the Search for the Nanohertz Gravitational-wave Background with the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array

Boris Goncharov et al.

Summary: A nanohertz-frequency stochastic gravitational-wave background can be potentially detected through the precise timing of millisecond pulsars, revealing a common-spectrum component. Recent data supports the presence of a common-spectrum process, but analysis may suffer from model misspecification. Extensions and combinations of datasets will improve the prospects of identifying spatial correlations necessary for claiming a detection of the gravitational-wave background.

Massive black hole binary systems and the NANOGrav 12.5 yr results

H. Middleton et al.

Summary: NANOGrav has detected a common stochastic signal across a series of pulsars, potentially linked to a stochastic gravitational-wave background caused by unresolved massive black hole binaries. Using astronomical models and additional constraints, the merger rate and timescale of black hole binaries can be inferred, suggesting that a sufficiently large population of black holes will form and merge within a Hubble time.

Common-spectrum process versus cross-correlation for gravitational-wave searches using pulsar timing arrays

Joseph D. Romano et al.

Summary: NANOGrav has reported strong statistical evidence for a common-spectrum red-noise process in their 12.5-year analysis, but there is currently little evidence for quadrupolar spatial correlations across pulsars in the array. They provide a back-of-the-envelope illustration for nonexperts to understand the results using a simple signal + noise model and frequentist statistics.

Insights into searches for anisotropies in the nanohertz gravitational-wave background

Yacine Ali-Haimoud et al.

Summary: In the coming years, pulsar timing arrays are expected to detect the stochastic gravitational-wave background produced by inspiraling supermassive black hole binaries, and potentially constrain exotic physics. Current research mainly focuses on the isotropic and anisotropic properties of the gravitational-wave background. By analyzing pulsar timing data, insights into optimal search strategies for anisotropies have been gained, as well as the sensitivity to such phenomena.
