Orbital alignment and mass segregation in galactic nuclei via vector resonant relaxation

Nathan Magnan et al.

Summary: Supermassive black holes dominate the gravitational potential in galactic nuclei and cause relaxation of stellar orbital planes through potential fluctuations. A maximum entropy method is used to determine the long-term distribution of orientations and it is found that the heaviest stars reside in a thin equatorial disc. This work presents a possible novel method to study the distribution of intermediate mass black holes in galactic nuclei indirectly.

AGN as potential factories for eccentric black hole mergers

J. Samsing et al.

Summary: New research has found that black hole mergers in active galactic nuclei disk environments can result in an excess of eccentric mergers compared to circular mergers. This phenomenon may be due to frequent interactions between single and binary black holes, as well as small mutual inclinations.

The Young Stars in the Galactic Center

Sebastiano D. von Fellenberg et al.

Summary: In this study, we conducted a large spectroscopic survey of the Galactic Center using the SINFONI IFU at the VLT. By analyzing the spectra of over 2800 stars and using the Bracket-gamma absorption lines, we identified 195 young stars and extended the known list of young stars. We introduced an isotropic cluster prior to explore the angular momentum distribution of the young stars and found significant differences between the observed distribution and an isotropic cluster. We also confirmed the previously reported warp of the clockwise disk and discovered two new overdensities of angular momentum.

A numerical study of stellar discs in galactic nuclei

Taras Panamarev et al.

Summary: This study explores the dynamics of stellar discs near supermassive black holes through direct N-body simulations. It is found that an isolated nuclear stellar disc exhibits anisotropic mass segregation, but this tendency is suppressed when the disc is embedded in a more massive isotropic stellar cluster. In both cases, the initially thin disc becomes thicker, especially in the inner regions, due to fluctuating anisotropy. Vector resonant relaxation is the most efficient process around massive SMBHs, while two-body relaxation dominates in less massive SMBHs. Stellar discs embedded in isotropic clusters tend to become isotropic on a local timescale. The simulations indicate that dynamics of young stars in the Milky Way's center is driven by vector resonant relaxation, resulting in an anticorrelation between orbital inclinations and distance from the SMBH. The presence of stellar mass black holes or intermediate mass black holes is suggested to reproduce the observed scatter of angular momenta if the S-stars formed in a disc less than 10 Myr ago.

Resonant Dynamical Friction in Nuclear Star Clusters: Rapid Alignment of an Intermediate-mass Black Hole with a Stellar Disk

Akos Szolgyen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the dynamical evolution of an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) in a nuclear star cluster, finding that the IMBH's orbit aligns with the stellar disk due to orbit-averaged gravitational torques of stars. This resonant dynamical friction process may offer a test for the viability of IMBH candidates in the Galactic Center, with potential implications for the formation and evolution of black hole disks in dense stellar systems and gravitational wave source populations for LIGO, VIRGO, KAGRA, and LISA.

Central dynamics of multimass rotating star clusters

Maria Tiongco et al.

Summary: The study shows that multi-mass, rotating, spherical systems quickly form a massive core that lasts for several relaxation times. The degree of flattening of the systems is directly proportional to the initial degree of internal rotation, and this morphological effect has a clear characterization in terms of orbital architecture.
