Galaxy populations in the Hydra I cluster from the VEGAS survey I. Optical properties of a large sample of dwarf galaxies

Antonio La Marca et al.

Summary: Analyzing the properties of dwarf galaxies in the Hydra I cluster provides insights into their evolution. The size of the cluster does not affect the scaling relations of dwarf galaxies. High and mid-luminosity dwarfs in the cluster center tend to be redder and larger with increasing distance.

Galactic tides and the Crater II dwarf spheroidal: a challenge to LCDM?

Alexandra Borukhovetskaya et al.

Summary: The low velocity dispersion and large size of Crater II are difficult to explain in the context of the Lambda cold dark matter cosmogony. Recent studies favor the tidal interpretation, but our simulations show that while tides can explain the low velocity dispersion, they cannot account for the large size of Crater II. This suggests that either the system is not bound and near equilibrium, or the assumed NFW profile for its progenitor halo is incorrect. The latter possibility may indicate that baryonic effects or deviations from the LCDM paradigm play a role in extremely faint dwarfs.

Revisiting the relation between the number of globular clusters and galaxy mass for low-mass galaxies

Dennis Zaritsky

Summary: By analyzing data from 203 galaxies, we find a nearly linear relationship between the number of globular clusters and total galaxy mass, even in low-mass galaxies. This challenges hierarchical galaxy formation models and raises new questions about the formation and distribution of globular clusters.

Tracing stars in Milky Way satellites with A-SLOTH

Li-Hsin Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stellar mass-to-halo mass relation in Milky Way-like systems and finds a plateau in the ultrafaint regime. The mass of stars in this plateau provides information about star formation prior to supernovae and regulates further star formation. The number of luminous satellites also increases rapidly with decreasing mass until reaching a certain point. Additionally, the relative streaming velocity between baryons and dark matter at high redshift is important for determining the number of ultrafaint dwarf galaxies.

Forward-modelling the luminosity, distance, and size distributions of the Milky Way satellites

Viraj Manwadkar et al.

Summary: By using the GRUMPY model to forward model dwarf galaxy formation and evolution, we found that the luminosity and distance distributions of model satellites are consistent with those measured in surveys. Additionally, the model can simultaneously reproduce the observed distribution of stellar half-mass radii of MW satellites and the overall r(1/2)-M-* relation observed in dwarf galaxies.

The Mass of the Milky Way from the H3 Survey

Jeff Shen et al.

Summary: This paper uses a hierarchical Bayesian model to study the mass distribution of the Milky Way halo and infers the mass of the Galaxy using kinematic data. The results are in good agreement with other studies, but limitations in the model's ability to describe the data are found, leading to an accuracy of about 15% in mass estimates.

Kinematics of Antlia 2 and Crater 2 from the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S 5)

Alexander P. Ji et al.

Summary: New spectroscopic observations of Antlia 2 and Crater 2, part of the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey, reveal an increase in confirmed member stars and velocity gradients consistent with tidal disruption simulations. A revised metallicity estimation for Antlia 2 suggests ongoing substantial stellar mass loss despite previous overestimation. Current dynamical models, requiring Antlia 2 to have lost over 90% of its stars, are in tension with the updated metallicity. Overall, the kinematic measurements support a tidal disruption scenario for the origin of these dwarf spheroidal galaxies.

Very Large Telescope Spectroscopy of Ultra-faint Dwarf Galaxies. I. Bootes I, Leo IV, and Leo V

Summary: In this study, we performed consistent reductions and measurements for three ultra-faint dwarf galaxies using VLT/GIRAFFE spectrograph data. We identified new members, refined physical parameters, and conducted a comparative analysis of previously discovered members. Additionally, we found new binary stars in Leo IV and Leo V, and reanalyzed the metallicity distribution function in Bootes I, leading to insights that will contribute to future dark matter studies.

Structures of Dwarf Satellites of Milky Way-like Galaxies: Morphology, Scaling Relations, and Intrinsic Shapes

Scott G. Carlsten et al.

Summary: The structure of dwarf galaxies is an important indicator of stellar feedback and environmental effects. By studying a sample of low-mass satellites, it was found that both early- and late-type dwarf satellites exhibit similar mass-size relations with mild size evolution during transformation. Comparisons with dwarf samples from other regions suggest that cluster environments may lead to differences in the size of dwarf galaxies at fixed mass.

A photometric and kinematic analysis of UDG1137+16 (dw1137+16): Probing ultradiffuse galaxy formation in a group environment

Jonah S. Gannon et al.

Summary: The formation mechanisms of ultradiffuse galaxies (UDGs) are still poorly understood, and new research combining deep imaging and integral field spectroscopy sheds light on the environmental associations and characteristics of UDG1137+16. The study suggests that UDG1137+16 is likely dark matter dominated and may not have been formed through a strong tidal interaction. Additionally, current dynamical mass estimates are not able to accurately constrain the total halo masses of UDGs.

An extended halo around an ancient dwarf galaxy

Anirudh Chiti et al.

Summary: Research has found that the Tucana II ultrafaint dwarf galaxy is more spatially extended and chemically primitive than previously thought, with extremely metal poor stars. Observations show an extended dark matter halo surrounding the galaxy, indicating possible early mergers or strong feedback processes. This suggests the potential for detailed studies of the stellar halos of relic galaxies.

The SAGA Survey. II. Building a Statistical Sample of Satellite Systems around Milky Way-like Galaxies

Yao-Yuan Mao et al.

Summary: The Stage II results of the SAGA Survey show that the satellite galaxies around Milky Way analogs exhibit similar characteristics to the broader distribution seen in the SAGA systems. The confirmed satellites show a lower quenched fraction than those in the Local Group, with majority of them being star-forming galaxies. The luminosity functions and radial distributions of the SAGA satellites are broadly consistent with theoretical predictions based on simulations and empirical models.
