Search for intermediate-mass black hole binaries in the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: This article reports on a dedicated search of data from the third observing run for intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) binary mergers. Although some marginal candidates were found, there was no sufficiently significant signal to indicate the detection of further IMBH mergers. The sensitivity of different search methods and the resulting upper limits on astrophysical merger rates were quantified.

The cosmic evolution of binary black holes in young, globular, and nuclear star clusters: rates, masses, spins, and mixing fractions

Michela Mapelli et al.

Summary: This study investigates the cosmic evolution of different populations of binary black holes (BBHs) using upgraded semi-analytical codes. The results show that the merger rate density of BBHs in globular clusters (GCs) and nuclear star clusters (NSCs) is not significantly affected by stellar metallicity, while the rate of isolated BBHs changes with metallicity. The behavior of BBHs in young star clusters (YSCs) is intermediate between isolated and GC/NSC BBHs. The local merger rate density of Nth-generation black holes is mostly influenced by the spin parameter. The primary black hole mass function evolves with redshift in GCs and NSCs but remains constant in YSCs and in the field.

Black hole mergers in compact star clusters and massive black hole formation beyond the mass gap

Francesco Paolo Rizzuto et al.

Summary: We present direct N-body simulations of young and compact low-metallicity star clusters and investigate the formation of massive black holes (BHs) through BH mergers and stellar mergers. The simulations show that each cluster hosts multiple BH merger events within the first tens of megayears, covering a wide range of BH masses. We also propose formation scenarios for massive BHs above the assumed lower mass-gap limit, including collisions of stars, BHs, and the direct collapse of stellar merger remnants. The results suggest that the updated stellar evolution models lead to the early formation of heavier stellar BHs and support the rapid formation of massive BHs through increased collision rates with massive stars. The simulations also reveal a possible first-generation formation scenario for GW190521-like events.

Preparing the next gravitational million-body simulations: evolution of single and binary stars in nbody6++gpu, mocca, and mcluster

A. W. H. Kamlah et al.

Summary: This paper presents the implementation of updated stellar evolution recipes in several codes and tests them through numerical simulations of star clusters. The results show differences in density, remnant masses, and binary fractions between the different models. The mocca models produce more black holes and helium white dwarfs, while nbody6++gpu models have a larger amount of white dwarf-white dwarf binaries.

A Population of Luminous Globular Clusters and Stripped Nuclei with Elevated Mass to Light Ratios around NGC 5128*

Antoine Dumont et al.

Summary: The central regions of tidally disrupted galaxies can survive as ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs) that hide among the luminous globular clusters (GCs) in the halo of massive galaxies. High-resolution spectroscopic observations of luminous GC candidates in NGC 5128/Centaurus A reveal new measurements and confirm the presence of overmassive black holes that contribute to elevated mass-to-light ratios. Bimodality is observed in the distribution of mass-to-light ratios, with a population of normal GCs and a population of GCs with elevated ratios. One extreme outlier, VHH81-01, is identified as a strong candidate for a tidally stripped nucleus.

MOCCA-SURVEY data base II - Properties of intermediate mass black holes escaping from star clusters

Konrad Maliszewski et al.

Summary: In this study, properties of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) that escape from star clusters due to dynamical interactions were investigated. The simulation models showed that high initial central density and central escape velocities increase the likelihood of IMBH formation and ejection. The majority of escaping IMBHs form binaries with other black holes and have masses between 100 and 140 M o . Escape is facilitated through repeated mergers in these binaries, with gravitational wave emission playing a key role. The study also discusses the observational implications and potential influence of gravitational wave recoil kicks on the process.

MOCCA-survey data base: extra galactic globular clusters - II. Milky Way and Andromeda

A. Leveque et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel method combining semi-analytic models and Monte Carlo models to simulate the co-evolution of globular cluster systems in galaxies. The results suggest that the mass build-up of globular clusters in galaxies like the Milky Way and Andromeda cannot solely be explained by infalling clusters, but also depends on interactions and mergers of clusters as well as interactions with gas.

Dynamics of binary black holes in young star clusters: the impact of cluster mass and long-term evolution

Stefano Torniamenti et al.

Summary: Dynamical interactions in dense star clusters are effective formation channels for binary black holes. The formation processes of low-mass and high-mass star clusters lead to two distinct populations of binary black hole mergers. Tidal disruption hinders the formation and evolution of binary black holes in low-mass clusters, while high-mass clusters undergo effective dynamical hardening. These differences are crucial for understanding the formation channels of gravitational-wave sources.

Merger rate density of stellar-mass binary black holes from young massive clusters, open clusters, and isolated binaries: Comparisons with LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA results

Sambaran Banerjee

Summary: This study investigates the roles of cluster dynamics and massive binary evolution in the formation of binary black hole (BBH) mergers over cosmic time. The results show that dynamical BBH mergers can be obtained from long-term models of young massive clusters evolving into open clusters. In addition, population synthesis models and observed cosmic star formation histories are used to estimate BBH merger yields from both dynamical and binary evolution channels. The combined results are consistent with gravitational wave observations and suggest that BBH mergers at high redshifts may be predominately determined by binary evolution physics. However, there are some limitations in the present approach that need to be considered in future research.

Intermediate mass black hole formation in compact young massive star clusters

Francesco Paolo Rizzuto et al.

Summary: Young and dense massive star clusters are favorable environments for the formation of intermediate mass black holes through collisions, with very massive stars rapidly growing to form IMBHs. The formation efficiency is higher in more compact clusters, and lower accretion fractions also contribute to IMBH formation.

Summary: The study reveals unique characteristics of the merging binary black hole (BBH) population, including a specific primary mass spectrum and misaligned component spins leading to precession of the orbital plane. The research also estimates merger rates, indicating potential correlation between BBH rate and redshift but not exceeding the star formation rate. Additionally, recent exceptional events are examined in relation to population models, with GW190814 being identified as an outlier due to its low secondary mass.

Merging stellar and intermediate-mass black holes in dense clusters: implications for LIGO, LISA, and the next generation of gravitational wave detectors

Manuel Arca Sedda et al.

Summary: The study explores a possible pathway for the growth of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) through merging with stellar black holes in dense clusters. It is found that the mass and spin of the components involved in IMRI and the resulting merger remnant provide crucial information about the mechanisms governing IMBH formation. The future collaboration among gravitational wave detectors is expected to fully reveal the formation and evolution of IMBHs.

Intermediate-mass black holes from stellar mergers in young star clusters

Ugo N. Di Carlo et al.

Summary: The study reveals that IMBHs are most likely formed in young star clusters through runaway collisions, while the formation channel of binary BH mergers is strongly suppressed by the low escape velocity of the clusters. IMBHs are highly efficient in pairing with other BHs, with approximately 70% of them being members of a binary BH at the end of the simulations. However, no IMBH-BH mergers were found.

Dynamics of binary black holes in low-mass young star clusters

Sara Rastello et al.

Summary: Black holes (Buis) and binary black holes (BBHs) formed in low-mass young star clusters are mainly generated through dynamical exchanges, with most BBH mergers involving primary Buis with lower mass. The percentage of exchanged BBHs shows a strong dependence on the mass of the host star cluster, while the efficiency of BBH mergers only exhibits a mild correlation with the mass of the host star cluster, as indicated by the research data.
