Immobilization of FeFe-hydrogenase on black TiO2 nanotubes as biocathodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the immobilization of ferredoxin tagged FeFe-hydrogenase on black TiO2 nanotubes and shows that the enzymes attach on the top surface of the nanotubes rather than on the inner walls. However, direct electron transfer between the enzyme and nanotubes for the hydrogen evolution reaction can still be achieved in neutral media.

Novel strategies towards efficient molecular biohydrogen production by dark fermentative mechanism: present progress and future perspective

Varsha Jayachandran et al.

Summary: With the alarming increase in greenhouse and toxic gas emissions, there is an urgent need to shift towards alternative fuel usage to mitigate pollution. Dark fermentative biohydrogen production (DFBHP) is a low energy-consuming process with high value-added potential. However, this process faces challenges such as low hydrogen yield and accumulation of volatile fatty acids. Researchers have developed strategies to enhance DFBHP productivity, including process optimization and substrate pretreatment, bioaugmentation, co-culture of bacteria, additive supplementation, bioreactor design considerations, metabolic engineering, nanotechnology, and immobilization of bacteria. This review summarizes some improvement techniques that significantly enhance biohydrogen productivity in the DFBHP process.

Second and Outer Coordination Sphere Effects in Nitrogenase, Hydrogenase, Formate Dehydrogenase, and CO Dehydrogenase

Sven T. Stripp et al.

Summary: Gases like H-2, N-2, CO2, and CO are important feedstock for green energy conversion and as sources of nitrogen and carbon. However, their industrial transformation and production require significant energy input, whereas nature efficiently converts them at ambient conditions using gas-processing metalloenzymes (GPMs). In this review, the importance of the cofactor/protein interface in GPMs is emphasized, and the effects of second and outer coordination sphere on catalytic activity are discussed.

Non-Covalent Integration of a [FeFe]-Hydrogenase Mimic to Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Afridi Zamader et al.

Summary: Surface integration of molecular catalysts inspired by hydrogenase enzymes' active sites offers a promising approach for developing noble metal-free and sustainable H2 production technologies. In this study, a diironhexacarbonyl complex with two pyrene groups per catalytic unit was prepared and electrochemically characterized, allowing for its smooth integration onto multiwalled carbon nanotube-based electrodes through pi-interactions. The grafted catalyst achieved turnover numbers for H2 production of up to 4 +/- 2x10(3) within 20 hours of bulk electrolysis at neutral pH.

Promoting photo-fermentative hydrogen production performance by substituting the rnf promoter in Rhodobacter capsulatus

Hongyu Ma et al.

Summary: The Rnf complex plays a crucial role in hydrogen production, and increasing the expression level of rnf genes can significantly enhance hydrogen yields and production rates. Expression of the rnf fusion construct in background strains can further increase hydrogen production, and mutants with overexpressed Rnf complex are more competitive than naturally isolated strains.
