Recent advances in consolidated bioprocessing for conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into bioethanol-A review

Selvakumar Periyasamy et al.

Summary: With the growth of the global population, it is crucial to develop long-term technological advancements in order to meet energy demands while preserving the Earth's limited resources. Using renewable energy systems offers numerous benefits, such as stabilizing energy supply and demand, ensuring food security and economic stability, and protecting the environment from pollution. Bioethanol presents a potential alternative as a renewable and long-term energy source, but reducing production costs is critical for its long-term viability and economic competitiveness against petroleum. Converting lignocellulose to bioethanol through consolidated bioprocessing could offer a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient approach, but further research and optimization are still needed. This review explores biomass pretreatments, process enhancements, recombinant microbial catalysts and enzymes, and metabolic engineering in the context of consolidated bioprocessing, providing an overview to guide future research in lignocellulosic biomass for bioethanol production.

Lignocellulosic Biomass Valorization for Bioethanol Production: a Circular Bioeconomy Approach

Arti Devi et al.

Summary: Lignocellulosic biomass from different sectors is used as a precursor for the production of bioethanol and biochemicals. The integration of various conversion techniques on a single platform under the biorefinery approach is gaining interest globally. The economic viability of a lignocellulosic biorefinery depends on the efficient utilization of its major components, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The heterogeneous structure and recalcitrant nature of lignocellulosic biomass present challenges in its conversion into bioethanol and other value-added products. Successful bioconversion processes rely on effective pre-treatment, hydrolysis, and fermentation methods. Future research should focus on fully utilizing lignocellulosic biomass with minimal waste.

Summary: This study investigates the potential of eliminating washing step in glucose recovery and ethanol production scheme when DES pretreatment is applied. The most suitable DES for pretreating sugarcane bagasse was found to be ChCl-MA, which resulted in high sugar recovery and low sugar loss during the process. The maximum amount of glucose recovered after 48 hours of enzymatic hydrolysis from both washed and unwashed pretreated substrate was insignificantly different, but slightly higher bioethanol was obtained from the unwashed pretreated substrate compared to the washed substrate.
