A novel general modeling of the viscoelastic properties of fluids: Application to mechanical relaxation and low frequency oscillation measurements of liquid water

F. Aitken et al.

Summary: The aim of this paper is to calculate the time dependence of the mean position (and orientation) of a fluid particle under mechanical action in a thermodynamic equilibrium. Through the introduction of a mechanical energy functional and the use of inertial modes and action temperature, the model predicts a dynamic phase transition where the rheological behavior of the medium changes from solid-like to liquid-like with increased mechanical action. This model is applied to analyze recent liquid water viscoelastic data, indicating prevalent elastic behavior in confined geometry. The model provides a coherent and unified explanation for these data along with transport properties. It concludes that any finite volume of fluid at rest possesses static shear elasticity and should be considered as a solid-like medium.

Fast equilibration mechanisms in disordered materials mediated by slow liquid dynamics

Zijian Song et al.

Summary: This study identifies a molecular process known as Slow Mode (SAP) that is universally observed in liquid dynamics of thin films and is closely connected to high-temperature flow. The findings suggest that measurements of liquid dynamics can be used to predict the equilibration rate in the glassy state.

Mesoscopic Collective Dynamics in Liquids and the Dual Model

Fabio Peluso

Summary: This paper presents a dual model of liquids (DML) from a solid picture by proposing a mesoscopic view of liquids as dynamic aggregates of molecules in an amorphous liquid. The model explains the interaction between the aggregates and the rest of the liquid through elastic waves and anharmonic wave-packets. It derives the anharmonic interaction term from first principles and provides quantitative expressions for thermophysical properties. The model also addresses the problem of deviations in thermophysical quantities and discusses the role of relaxation times in collective dynamics. The paper concludes by suggesting future research directions and experimental investigations.

The Phonon Theory of Liquids and Biological Fluids: Developments and Applications

Dima Bolmatov

Summary: This viewpoint discusses the phonon theory of liquids and biological fluids. The theory predicts the existence of phonon gaps in vibrational spectra of liquids and a thermodynamic boundary in the supercritical state. Experimental evidence reaffirms these predictions and also leads to the discovery of phonon gaps in liquid crystals, block copolymers, and biological membranes. Phonon gaps define viscoelastic crossovers in cellular membranes and play a role in lipid self-diffusion, stress propagation, and transmembrane transport. External stimuli-mediated molecular interactions control the plasticity of biological membranes, resulting in learning and memory.

Molecular Modeling of Ionic Liquids: Force-Field Validation and Thermodynamic Perspective from Large-Scale Fast-Growth Solvation Free Energy Calculations

Zhaoxi Sun et al.

Summary: In molecular modelling of novel solvents such as ionic liquids, scaling atomic charges is a common practice to improve the agreement between experiments and simulations. This study presents a large-scale calculation of solvation free energies in scaled ionic liquids and compares the results obtained from density-derived choices and solvation-thermodynamics-derived choices. The findings reveal that scaling factors affect the intermolecular interactions and density monotonically decreases with decreasing scaling factor. However, solvation free energies do not show consistent monotonic behaviors due to competing electrostatic and vdW responses. Interestingly, the solvation-free-energy-derived scaling factor is generally slightly higher than the density-derived one.

Deformations, relaxation, and broken symmetries in liquids, solids, and glasses: A unified topological field theory

Matteo Baggioli et al.

Summary: We developed a general theory of phonons as Goldstone bosons in crystals, glasses, and liquids by combining hydrodynamic and field theoretic methods. Our theory is based on nonaffine displacements and the consequent Goldstone phase relaxation. We found a connection between the conservation of specific higher-form currents and the properties of the underlying deformation field. Our formalism predicted the presence of propagating shear waves above a critical wave vector in liquids, and provided a theoretical explanation for the positive sound dispersion phenomenon for longitudinal sound. The main collective relaxation timescale of a liquid or a glass was found to be determined by the phase relaxation time, which is not necessarily related to the Maxwell time. We also built a non-equilibrium effective action using the in-in formalism on the Schwinger-Keldysh contour, which further supported our findings.

Universal G′ ∼ L-3 Law for the Low-Frequency Shear Modulus of Confined Liquids

Alessio Zaccone et al.

Summary: Liquids confined to sub-millimeter scales exhibit a large elasticity effect, with their low-frequency shear modulus increasing as the confinement length decreases. This universal law applies to various types of liquids and has potential applications in microfluidics, mechanochemistry, and energy fields.

Identification of Thermal Response of Mesoscopic Liquids under Mechanical Excitation: From Harmonic to Nonharmonic Thermal Wave

Eni Kume et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that a low-frequency shear mechanical field affects the thermal equilibrium of liquids, leading to the generation of shear waves. Thermal waves are stable at low strain amplitudes and low frequencies, but thermal harmonics develop with increasing frequency or strain amplitude. This challenges the extension of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem to nonequilibrium fluids.

Highlighting Thermo-Elastic Effects in Confined Fluids

Eni Kume et al.

Summary: This study presents an innovative thermal approach to investigate solid-like properties of liquids, identifying a dynamic thermo-elastic mesoscopic behavior. The research shows that a portion of shear strain energy is converted into thermal energy in cold and hot shear bands that synchronize with the applied shear field, indicating a coupling to shear elastic modes in agreement with low frequency shear elasticity.
