Extraction, Chemical Characterization, In Vitro Antioxidant, and Antidiabetic Activity of Canola (Brassica napus L.) Meal

Saira Hussain et al.

Summary: Canola meal extracts were generated using different solvents, and water was found to be the best solvent for the recovery of glucosinolates. Genotype-2 canola meal had higher quantities of phenolic, glucosinolate, and antioxidant compounds compared to genotype-1. Analysis revealed the presence of 32 compounds, including nine glucosinolates and twenty-three phenolic derivatives, in canola meal extracts. Some of these extracts exhibited mild to moderate in-vitro antidiabetic activity.

Phytosterol, Tocopherol and Carotenoid Retention during Commercial Processing of Brassica napus (Canola) Oil

Clare L. Flakelar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of processing techniques on the retention of bioactive compounds in Australian canola oil. The results showed that modern processing techniques retain high concentrations of phytosterols and tocopherols, and further research on enrichment strategies is warranted. This has significant implications for the development of nutrition and health-enhanced oil products, as well as adding value in the edible oil industry.

Antihypertensive effect of rapeseed peptides and their potential in improving the effectiveness of captopril

Yucheng Wang et al.

Summary: Rapeseed peptides have antihypertensive activity and showed potential synergy with captopril in vivo, leading to increased blood pressure lowering amplitude and duration. This synergy was not due to ACE inhibition, but possibly related to improvement in endogenous vasodilator contents.

Antiproliferative Rapeseed Defatted Meal Protein and Their Hydrolysates on MCF-7 Breast Cancer Cells and Human Fibroblasts

Romina L. Ferrero et al.

Summary: The study aimed to obtain an enzymatic hydrolysate of rapeseed protein that inhibits proliferation of breast cancer cells, while not affecting healthy human fibroblast cells. One of the hydrolysates showed anti-proliferative activity on MCF-7 cells, with a composition mainly consisting of 10 kDa peptides. This particular hydrolysate, DH1, has the potential to be a promising peptide extract for future research as a possible anti-breast cancer agent.

Summary: The research focused on purifying protease inhibitors (PIs) from canola meal of genetically diverse Brassica napus genotypes BLN-3347 and Rivette. The purified PIs exhibited diverse functionalities, inhibiting DPP-IV and ACE with differing effectiveness. These PIs have potential applications in human therapy and in breeding for canola disease resistance.

Summary: This study compared the effects of amaranth oil and rapeseed oil on atherosclerosis-related markers in overweight and obese subjects. It found that amaranth oil had a slight positive effect on adiponectin levels but negatively affected ApoB concentrations and ApoB/A1 ratio compared to rapeseed oil. Further research with longer intervention periods is needed to draw more conclusive results.
