Lifetime exposure to benzophenone-3 at an environmentally relevant concentration leads to female-biased social behavior and cognition deficits in zebrafish

Chenglian Bai et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the neurotoxicity of lifetime exposure to an environmentally relevant concentration of BP3 in zebrafish. The results showed that continuous BP3 exposure led to female-biased social behavioral deficits and learning and memory impairment. These effects were accompanied by changes in brain weight, dopamine concentration, neurogenesis, apoptotic cells, and expression of genes and proteins related to the apoptosis pathway.

A Natural Monoterpene Enol for Dispersive Liquid-Liquid Microextraction Based on Solidification of Floating Organic Droplets for Determination of Benzophenone Compounds in Water Samples

Xian Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, an effective and simple procedure using dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) based on solidification of floating organic droplets (SFO) was developed for the extraction of four benzophenone compounds from water samples. Alpha-terpineol, a natural monoterpene enol, was selected as the extractant due to its high solidification point, low cost, and environmental friendliness. The method showed good extraction performance with enrichment factors ranging from 29 to 47 and detection limits ranging from 0.12 to 0.53 μg/L. The recoveries ranged from 80.2% to 108.4% with RSDs less than 8.5%. The method was successfully applied to the determination of benzophenone compounds in aqueous solutions with satisfactory recoveries (83.0-107.0%).

Covalent organic framework-V modified porous polypropylene hollow fiber with detachable dumbbell-shaped structure for stir bar sorptive extraction of benzophenones

Zichun Liu et al.

Summary: Polypropylene hollow fiber is an ideal material for stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) due to its porous structure, large specific surface area, high mechanical strength, and good solvent resistance. In this work, a novel SBSE device using a detachable dumbbell-shaped polypropylene hollow fiber-based stir bar was designed and prepared. Covalent organic framework V (COF-V) was grown on the polypropylene hollow fiber through polydopamine modification, providing multi-interaction abilities for the extraction of benzophenones. The developed COF-V@polypropylene hollow fiber based SBSE method showed excellent performance in terms of linear range, linearity, sensitivity, and repeatability. It was successfully applied to the analysis of benzophenones in soil and sunscreen samples.

Saihong Yan et al.

Summary: Benzophenone-type ultraviolet (UV) filters (BPs) are commonly used in sunscreens, fragrances, and plastics, but they pose a great threat to aquatic organisms. This study investigated the toxicity and mechanism of BPs in Chinese rare minnows and found that they caused significant alterations in cell cycle, DNA replication, and repair pathways, as well as DNA damage and apoptosis.

Summary: This study assessed the occurrence of bisphenols and benzophenone UV filters in wild brown mussels collected from the coast of Algoa Bay, South Africa. The results showed that these contaminants were present in the mussels, with bisphenol AP (BPAP) having the highest concentration and benzophenone-1 (BzP-1) and benzophenone-3 (BzP-3) also present at relatively high concentrations. Human exposure was evaluated through mussel consumption.

A critical review of trends in advanced oxidation processes for the removal of benzophenone-3, fipronil, and propylparaben from aqueous matrices: Pathways and toxicity changes

Ivo A. Ricardo et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) used for the degradation of Benzophenone-3 (BP-3), fipronil (FIP), and propylparaben (PPB) in aqueous matrices. The review also surveys recent progress in overcoming the negative effects of operational parameters. It highlights the importance of incorporating Green Chemistry practices, such as the use of red mud for persulfate activation, in these processes. However, the challenge of achieving high degradation rates in real matrices remains. Successful degradation of target-CEC with the formation of less toxic transformation products has been reported for BP-3 and PPB.
