Naphthalene-2-sulfonate induced toxicity in blood cells of freshwater fish Channa punctatus using comet assay, micronucleus assay and ATIR-FTIR approach

Sukanya Mehra et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the genotoxic impact of naphthalene-2-sulfonate (2NS) on fresh water fish Channa punctatus, showing time and dose-dependent DNA damage that peaked after 60 days of exposure but exhibited some recovery after 30 days post-exposure. Spectral evaluation and structural analysis confirmed the toxicity of 2NS on the fish, supporting the findings of comet assay and micronucleus test.

Doxorubicin-Induced Cognitive Impairment: The Mechanistic Insights

Jiajia Du et al.

Summary: Chemotherapy can prolong survival in breast cancer patients, but drugs like doxorubicin may cause cognitive deficits including learning, reasoning, attention, and memory impairments. The mechanisms behind this chemo-brain phenomenon are complex and interconnected, involving DNA damage, oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis dysregulation, neurotransmitter changes, mitochondrial dysfunction, glial cell interactions, neurogenesis inhibition, and epigenetic factors.

Straightforward synthesis of cytosporone analogs AMS35AA and AMS35BB

Neimar Vitor et al.

Summary: Researchers have successfully synthesized the biologically active resorcinolic lipids AMS35AA and AMS35BB using 3,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid as the starting material, with excellent overall yields. The methods, including the synthesis of AMS35AA catalyzed by ascorbic acid, proved remarkably efficient in achieving the target compounds.

Comet assay: a versatile but complex tool in genotoxicity testing

Eugenia Cordelli et al.

Summary: The comet assay is a versatile method for measuring DNA strand breaks in individual cells, with modified versions able to detect oxidized DNA bases and reveal DNA damage induced indirectly by reactive oxygen species. Despite being semi-quantitative, there are possible approaches to improve DNA damage quantitation and enhance protocol standardization for comparability. The in vivo comet assay has an advantage over the micronucleus erythrocyte test as it can be applied to any organ and has been used in risk assessment for specific food contaminants.
