Antibacterial LDPE-based nanocomposites with salicylic and rosmarinic acid-modified layered double hydroxides

Summary: Polymer nanocomposites with active and natural compounds dispersed in the polymer matrix offer a tunable way to develop antibacterial packaging materials. By intercalating mono-deprotonated rosmarinic and salicylic acid into nitrate-intercalated MgAl layered double hydroxide, antibacterial host-guest systems were successfully prepared, showing selective antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The controlled release of active compounds from the polymer nanocomposites was evidenced by fluorescence spectroscopy, indicating the potential for practical application in food packaging.

Melt-Processed Bioactive EVOH Films Incorporated with Ferulic Acid

Summary: In this study, antimicrobial and antioxidant films based on EVOH copolymer containing low amounts of ferulic acid were successfully developed by melt extrusion. The films exhibited UV blocking effect, improved thermal stability, increased water vapor and oxygen transmission rates, and showed significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. This suggests the potential applications of ferulic acid in active packaging for food products.

Durability of Biodegradable Polymer Nanocomposites

The lack of data on the durability of biodegradable polymer nanocomposites (BPN) has prompted a review summarizing recent literature data on environmental aging of BPN. Incorporating nanofillers into BP can improve durability, but poor dispersion may lead to faster degradation. Selected models describing the durability performance of BPN can be used to design materials with tailored degradation properties and durability.
