Intensified liquid-liquid extraction of biomolecules using ionic liquids in small channels

Yiota-Victoria Phakoukaki et al.

Summary: The experimental study on the continuous extraction of an amino acid from an aqueous solution into an ionic liquid phase demonstrated a double intensification of the solvent used and the overall process. Efficient extraction of the amino acid into the ionic liquid with high mass transfer coefficients was achieved in small channels, indicating promising potential for industrial applications.

Comparing amorphous silica, short-range-ordered silicates and silicic acid species by FTIR

Ruth Ellerbrock et al.

Summary: There is increasing interest in the terrestrial silicon cycle due to its implications for ecosystem performance. The current analytical methods are limited, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis is suggested as a promising tool for differentiation. We conducted FTIR analyses on various silicon species and found that peak broadening and shifts in the Si-O-Si absorption band can indicate changes in internal order and incorporation of larger ions. Short-range ordered aluminosilicates (SROAS) can be distinguished from pure amorphous Si species using specific IR absorption bands.

Removal of lead ions (Pb2+) from water and wastewater: a review on the low-cost adsorbents

Imran Rahman Chowdhury et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the research findings on the low-cost removal of lead ions using different types of adsorbents. Different types of adsorbents were compared in terms of adsorption capacity, removal performances, sorbent dose, optimum pH, temperature, initial concentration, and contact time. The best adsorbents were identified, including natural materials, industrial byproducts, agricultural waste, forest waste, and biotechnology-based adsorbents.

Thermal Degradation Behavior of Thiol-ene Composites Loaded with a Novel Silicone Flame Retardant

Haonan Chen et al.

Summary: A novel silicone flame retardant PMDA was synthesized and blended with a commercial thiol-ene (TE) to obtain a flame-retardant TE (FRTE) composite. The addition of PMDA improved the flame retardancy of the TE composite, as shown by cone calorimeter measurement. The thermal stability and degradation mechanism of FRTE in nitrogen were studied by thermogravimetric analysis. The activation energies of the FRTE degradation were found to be higher than those of neat TE, indicating improved thermal stability.

Imidazolium-Modified Silica Gel for Highly Selective Preconcentration of Ag(I) from the Nitric Acid Medium

Dzhamilay N. Konshina et al.

Summary: The ion-exchange behavior of a modified silica gel was studied for the extraction of Ag(I) from nitric acid media. The extraction was shown to occur with high selectivity even in multicomponent systems. A mixed ion exchange-adsorption mechanism was proposed based on X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy data. The effect of phase contact time and nitric acid concentration on Ag(I) distribution coefficient was investigated. Selectivity factors were calculated for extraction from multicomponent systems under steady-state and dynamic concentration conditions.

Toward the Recovery of Platinum Group Metals from a Spent Automotive Catalyst with Supported Ionic Liquid Phases

Olga Lanaridi et al.

Summary: The polySILP material showed the capability to separate PGMs from major accompanying interferences in a single separation step, while avoiding problems arising from ionic liquid leaching in the case of SILPs. The use of supported ionic liquid phases allowed a significant reduction in the amount of required ionic liquid compared to conventional liquid-liquid separation, while preventing issues related to emulsion formation. Subsequent stripping experiments further purified the PGMs and facilitated their desorption from the solid material into a pure solution, illustrating a new and convenient approach for recycling platinum group metals through the concept of chemisorbed polySILPs.
