Halogenated Baicalein as a Promising Antiviral Agent toward SARS-CoV-2 Main Protease

Kowit Hengphasatporn et al.

Summary: The ongoing pandemic serves as a reminder of the constant threat of emerging infectious diseases to global citizens. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a technique for discovering inhibitors to aid in effective drug design. In this study, a fragment molecular orbital (FMO)-based virtual screening approach was proposed to predict the molecular binding energy of potential SARS-CoV-2 main protease inhibitors. Using quantum mechanical methods and trajectory analysis, brominated baicalein was identified as a potent inhibitor of the main protease and showed no significant toxicity in in vitro and in vivo studies. The findings suggest that brominated baicalein has potential as a novel SARS-CoV-2 protease inhibitor.

Atranorin, an antimicrobial metabolite from lichen Parmotrema rampoddense exhibited in vitro anti-breast cancer activity through interaction with Akt activity

Adhikesavan Harikrishnan et al.

Summary: In this study, Atranorin showed selective cytotoxicity against MDA MB-231 and MCF-7 breast cancer cells through its interactions with Akt and Bax proteins, and downregulation of anti-apoptotic Akt levels. These findings suggest Atranorin as a potential natural molecule for targeted therapy in breast cancer.
