Mechanism of hydroxyl radicals formation on the reduced rutile

Piotr Rychtowski et al.

Summary: TiO2 with Ti3+ defects was prepared by heating of titania raw material under flow of an ammonia gas. Different types of surface defects were formed in titania during the heat treatment process and were analyzed by EPR technique. Enhanced formation of hydroxyl radicals was observed under both UV and visible light irradiations on TiO2 sample prepared at 700℃, which contained inner Ti3+ centers and oxygen vacancies in rutile lattice sites. The presence of rutile defects likely increased the formation of O-2(-•) radicals, leading to the generation of H2O2 and further hydroxyl radicals. The formation of inner Ti3+ centers in rutile created an intra band gap, enhancing its visible light activity.

Role of the Hydroxyl Groups Coordinated toTiO2 Surface on the Photocatalytic Decomposition of Ethylene at Different Ambient Conditions

Piotr Rychtowski et al.

Summary: The thermal heating of titania pulp under different atmospheres can result in TiO2 with different structures and oxygen surface defects. Heating in H-2 atmosphere accelerates the dehydration and crystallization of TiO2 compared to heating in Ar atmosphere. The activity of TiO2 is affected by the quantity of chemisorbed OH groups on its surface. TiO2 with acidic active sites can serve as an excellent photocatalyst for the decomposition of ethylene under UV light.

Impact of TiO2 Surface Defects on the Mechanism of Acetaldehyde Decomposition under Irradiation of a Fluorescent Lamp

Piotr Rychtowski et al.

Summary: The heat treatment of TiO2 at different temperatures introduces surface defects, which greatly impact its photocatalytic properties in the decomposition of acetaldehyde under visible light. The type of surface defects plays a crucial role in the oxidation process and the overall efficiency of TiO2 as a photocatalyst.

Highly efficient Ti3+ self-doped TiO2 co-modified with carbon dots and palladium nanocomposites for disinfection of bacterial and fungi

Jingtao Zhang et al.

Summary: The Pd/CDs/Ti3+-TiO2 nanocomposites synthesized in this study exhibited superior photocatalyzed antibacterial activity against E. coli and five pathogenic agricultural fungi, with minimal dark cytotoxicity on HepG2 and V-79 cells. Additionally, the recycling capacity for the photodisinfective activity of the nanocomposites was found to be unchanged after five cycles. Four active species contributing to the photoinduced antimicrobial activity of the catalyst were identified as h(+), center dot O-2(-), center dot OH, and e(-).

Defective Dopant-Free TiO2 as an Efficient Visible Light-Active Photocatalyst

Marcin Janczarek et al.

Summary: This review explored the preparation, characterization, mechanisms, and activity testing of defective titania, suggesting that self-doped TiO2 could be a more cost-effective photocatalytic material. However, there are still uncertain research findings and unanswered questions that require further investigation and verification.

On the mechanism of photocatalytic reactions on CuxO@TiO2 core-shell photocatalysts

Kunlei Wang et al.

Summary: Titania is a commonly used photocatalyst with important environmental applications, but it has shortcomings such as charge carrier recombination and inactivity under visible light. Doping, surface modification, and coupling with other ions/compounds have been used to enhance the activity of titania-based photocatalysts, but stability remains a challenge.
