Comparing the LC-MS Phenolic Acids Profiles of Seven Different Varieties of Brown Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Shuyi Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the phenolic compounds in seven varieties of brown rice from southern China, finding significant variations in total phenolic content, with one red rice variety having significantly higher levels compared to others. The high phenolic content of brown rice can guide further research on the functional properties of crops.

Modulation of High-Fat Diet-Induced Brain Oxidative Stress by Ferulate-Rich Germinated Brown Rice Ethyl Acetate Extract

Nur Hanisah Azmi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the neuroprotective effect of germinated brown rice ethyl acetate extract (GBR-EA) on oxidative changes induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) in rats. GBR-EA supplementation improves lipid profile and serum antioxidant status, regulates the expression of antioxidant and inflammatory genes, and attenuates pro-inflammatory changes in the hippocampus. This study highlights the potential of GBR-EA to ameliorate neurodegenerative processes resulting from high cholesterol consumption.

Phytochemical profiling and cellular antioxidant efficacy of different rice varieties in colorectal adenocarcinoma cells exposed to oxidative stress

Akanksha Tyagi et al.

Summary: In this study, ethanol extracts of white, brown, and black Korean rice varieties were analyzed for their antioxidant activity, phenolic content, and cellular antioxidant activity. The highest antioxidant assays and phenolic, flavonoid, and anthocyanin content were found in the free fractions of black rice. The phytochemicals present in black rice, including ascorbic acid, vanillic acid, p-coumaric acid, catechin, epigallocatechin, and quercetin, were quantified using UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS2. The cellular antioxidant activity of black rice was comparable to that of ascorbic acid. These findings highlight the potential health benefits of consuming black and brown rice, and their potential use in the development of functional food products.

The effect of a brown-rice diets on glycemic control and metabolic parameters in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and controlled clinical trials

Anis Farhanah Abdul Rahim et al.

Summary: The study found that compared to white rice diet, brown rice diet did not improve glycemic control in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes patients, but could reduce weight and increase HDL cholesterol levels. Therefore, although brown rice does not significantly improve glycemic control, it can be used as an alternative to white rice.
