The additive impact of cardio-metabolic disorders and psychiatric illnesses on accelerated brain aging

Meghann C. Ryan et al.

Summary: Severe mental illnesses, such as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia spectrum disorder, increase the risk of accelerated brain aging. These illnesses have independent effects on whole-brain quantile regression index (QRI), with schizophrenia spectrum disorder having the greatest impact. Hypertension has a significant effect on both individuals with and without severe mental illnesses. The volume of white matter hyperintensities is associated with QRI, primarily influenced by cardio-metabolic disorders, especially hypertension.

Cell type-specific manifestations of cortical thickness heterogeneity in schizophrenia

Maria A. Di Biase et al.

Summary: This study found that cortical thickness heterogeneity in schizophrenia is related to interregional variation in distinct neural cell types. Different cell types are associated with different patient subtypes. Analyzing genomic, transcriptomic, and brain phenotypic data can provide insights into schizophrenia subtypes for future research.

Brain charts for the human lifespan

R. A. I. Bethlehem et al.

Summary: Neuroimaging has become a widely used tool in brain research, but there is currently a lack of reference standards to quantify individual differences over time. In this study, researchers created an open resource that benchmarks brain morphology using a large dataset of MRI scans. The brain charts identified neurodevelopmental milestones and showed high individual stability and robustness to technical and methodological differences.

Cross-ethnicity/race generalization failure of behavioral prediction from resting-state functional connectivity

Jingwei Li et al.

Summary: Algorithmic biases favoring majority populations pose a significant challenge to the use of machine learning for precision medicine. In this study, the researchers assessed such bias in prediction models of behavioral phenotypes using brain functional magnetic resonance imaging. The results showed a bias towards White Americans in the predictive models, resulting in higher prediction errors for African Americans. However, training the models on African Americans improved prediction accuracy but still fell below that for White Americans. Overall, this study highlights the need for caution and further research when applying current brain-behavior prediction models in minority populations.

Individual deviations from normative models of brain structure in a large cross-sectional schizophrenia cohort

Summary: The study found widespread brain structural abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia, including reductions in white matter tracts and cortical regions. However, the locations of these structural abnormalities are highly inconsistent between individuals, with most patients not matching the group-consensus pathological maps.

Summary: Studies of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have shown volume abnormalities in multiple cortical regions, especially in prefrontal and emotion-related areas. The impact of comorbid depression on findings is discussed, with adjusted results still significant.
