Neurostructural traces of early life adversities: A meta-analysis exploring age- and adversity-specific effects

Tania M. Pollok et al.

Summary: Early life adversities (ELAs) are associated with an increased risk of psychopathology and structural brain alterations. A meta-analysis of gray matter volume (GMV) alterations suggests that ELAs have a common impact on the right hippocampus and amygdala, left inferior frontal gyrus, and also show age and maltreatment-specific effects.

Cohort profile: biological pathways of risk and resilience in Syrian refugee children (BIOPATH)

Fiona S. McEwen et al.

Summary: The BIOPATH cohort was established to investigate the interplay of psychosocial and biological factors in the development of resilience and mental health problems in Syrian refugee children. This cohort, the first of its kind in the Middle East, is based in Lebanon, a middle-income country greatly affected by the refugee crisis. The study collected data through individual interviews, biological sample collection, and various measurements to examine the well-being and mental health of the children and their caregivers. This article provides detailed information about the cohort, including sampling and recruitment, data collection and measurements, demographic data, attrition and potential bias, as well as key findings on resilience and mental health problems in children.

Adverse childhood experiences and late-life diurnal HPA axis activity: Associations of different childhood adversity types and interaction with timing in a sample of older East Prussian World War II refugees

Bernhard C. L. Maier et al.

Summary: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have negative effects on health outcomes, and alterations in the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis might play a role. This study examined the relationship between ACEs and diurnal HPA axis functioning in older adults, and found that type and timing of ACEs influence HPA axis activity in old age.
