A spatiotemporal transcriptomic network dynamically modulates stalk development in maize

Liang Le et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the transcriptomes of maize stalks to reveal spatial and temporal expression patterns among different developmental zones and internodes, constructed a transcriptional regulatory network with fine resolution, and identified key modules and candidate genes determining stalk length and thickness.

Machine learning approaches for crop improvement: Leveraging phenotypic and genotypic big data

Hao Tong et al.

Summary: Genomic selection utilizes machine learning and genotyping data to predict agronomically relevant phenotypic traits, thus reducing the reliance on phenotypic data and improving breeding efficiency. To further improve genomic selection, it is necessary to collect intermediate phenotype data and develop modeling techniques, while also considering the transferability of models between different environments.

Developmental genetics of maize vegetative shoot architecture

Josh Strable

Summary: The high productivity of maize is largely driven by denser planting practices, higher yield potential per land area, and increased yield potential per plant. The structure of the shoot is critical to maize grain yield and biomass. Plant architecture is ultimately determined by meristem activity, developmental patterning, and growth.

Using high-throughput multiple optical phenotyping to decipher the genetic architecture of maize drought tolerance

Xi Wu et al.

Summary: The study introduced a high-throughput multiple optical phenotyping system to phenotype 368 maize genotypes under drought stress. Through the analysis of image-based traits, it identified 10,080 effective and heritable indicators of maize drought responses, revealing numerous significant locus-trait associations and candidate genes. The combination of high-throughput phenotyping and GWAS proved to be an effective approach in dissecting the genetic architecture of complex traits and identifying genes associated with drought tolerance.

The genetic mechanism of heterosis utilization in maize improvement

Yingjie Xiao et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that although yield heterosis in maize hybrids is correlated with minor-effect epistatic QTLs, it may be the result of major-effect additive and dominant QTLs during early developmental stages. The transition to flowering is identified as a critical stage for heterosis formation, where epistatic QTLs are activated by paternal alleles counteracting deleterious maternal alleles. The proposed molecular breeding approach targets key genes to accelerate maize breeding by reducing deleterious epistatic interactions.
