Potential Catalytic Role of Small Heterocycles in Interstellar H2 Formation: A Laboratory Astrochemistry Study on Furan and Its Hydrogenated Forms

Anita Schneiker et al.

Summary: It is well-accepted that the formation of interstellar H-2 is catalyzed by small heterocycles on the surface of interstellar grains. This study investigated the reaction of H atoms with different heterocycles in solid para-H-2. The results revealed the formation of various radicals and suggested the important role of small heterocycles in interstellar H-2 formation. Additionally, it was found that the ratios of different c-C4HxO (x = 4-8) species in an astrophysical object are determined by the rate of H atom addition and abstraction reactions.

Enhanced reactivity of oxygen-functionalised PAHs with atomic hydrogen - A route to the formation of small oxygen-carrying molecules

R. Jaganathan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between pentacene and its oxygen-functionalised form with atomic hydrogen under interstellar conditions. The experiments reveal that oxygen-functionalised PAHs have significantly larger reaction cross-sections compared to pentacene. The end product for both compounds is fully superhydrogenated pentacene, indicating the formation of small oxygen-bearing molecules under interstellar conditions.

Pure hydrocarbon cycles in TMC-1: Discovery of ethynyl cyclopropenylidene, cyclopentadiene, and indene

J. Cernicharo et al.

Summary: This study reports the first detection of three new pure hydrocarbon cycles in TMC-1, showing that cyclopentadiene and indene are exceptionally abundant despite their large size. The high abundances of these hydrocarbon cycles, along with other hydrocarbons, suggest a quantification of hydrocarbon rings in cold dark clouds and the identification of intermediate species involved in the synthesis of aromatic cycles. Further studies are needed to explain the formation of five- and six-membered rings under the cold conditions of a cloud like TMC-1.

Discovery of the Pure Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Indene (c-C9H8) with GOTHAM Observations of TMC-1

Andrew M. Burkhardt et al.

Summary: The study of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in interstellar and protostellar sources has been challenging, but recently the first interstellar detection of a pure hydrocarbon PAH, indene, provides new insights into the formation mechanisms of this important class of molecules. Observations and modeling suggest that the abundance of indene in TMC-1 is higher than expected, indicating potential inaccuracies in current astrochemical models and opening up possibilities for further discoveries of related species in dark clouds.

Non-energetic, Low-Temperature Formation of Ca-Glycyl Radical, a Potential Interstellar Precursor of Natural Amino Acids

Anita Schneiker et al.

Summary: The reaction of H atoms with glycine at 3.1 K in para-H-2 was studied, leading to the formation of C-a-glycyl radical with high selectivity. The radical is sensitive to UV light and can decompose into iminoacetic acid and H atom. This suggests that a-amino acids can be formed from glycine via the C-a-glycyl radical in non-energetic mechanisms in the solid phase of the interstellar medium.

Hydrogenation of small aromatic heterocycles at low temperatures

April M. Miksch et al.

Summary: Theoretical evaluation of the hydrogenation reactions of different aromatic molecules under astrophysical conditions shows that most reactions are exothermic, with activation barriers often overcome by quantum tunneling. Hydrogenated derivatives of furan and pyrrole are promising candidates for future interstellar detections.
