Volcanism and palaeoclimate change drive diversification of the world's largest whip spider (Amblypygi)

Frederic D. Schramm et al.

Summary: The study found that habitat fragmentation in the tropical deciduous forests of Mexico played a role in promoting diversification in the monotypic whip spider genus Acanthophrynus. Landscape changes driven by orogeny of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and glaciations during the Pliocene-Pleistocene period influenced the dispersal and diversification of these arthropods, leading to varying levels of diversity in different regions. The patterns of barriers and diversification identified in Acanthophrynus are reflected in the phylogeography of other co-distributed vertebrates and arthropods, highlighting the significant impact of geological events and climatic cycles on biodiversity in the Mexican Neotropics.

Goniurosaurus chengzheng sp. nov., a new species of Leopard Gecko from Guangxi, China (Squamata: Eublepharidae)

Xiao-Yu Zhu et al.

Summary: Six species of geckos in the Goniurosaurus genus have been discovered in Guangxi, China. A new species, Goniurosaurus chengzheng sp. nov., has been identified with unique characteristics such as body bands, precloacal pores, reddish-brown body color, and specific snout to eye distance. Mitochondrial genes were used to confirm the distinctiveness of the new species and its place within the Goniurosaurus molecular phylogeny.

Summary: Our study revealed that Saara species originated from an ancestor in the Iranian Plateau and dispersed to their current geographical range, with the separation of S. loricata from S. asmussi coinciding with orogenic events in the late Pliocene. Intraspecific genetic divergences within populations occurred during the Pleistocene.
