Phylogenomics and continental biogeographic disjunctions: insight from the Australian starflowers (Calytrix)

Francis J. Nge et al.

Summary: This study investigated the continental-scale disjunctions and associated drivers in a species-rich Australian plant genus, Calytrix. The results showed that the present-day distribution patterns of Calytrix can be explained by major extinction events caused by cooling and drying of the Australian continent. The Southwest Australia region is identified as a major diversification center and a common source area for dispersals.

New insights into the phylogeny and evolution of Podocarpaceae inferred from transcriptomic data

Luo Chen et al.

Summary: This study successfully resolved the intergeneric relationships of Podocarpaceae using a large number of nuclear and chloroplast orthologous groups, and revealed that morphological traits may have promoted its species diversification. Additionally, the results indicate that Podocarpaceae originated in Gondwana and both vicariance and dispersal have contributed to its current biogeographic patterns.

Phylotranscriptomics reveals the complex evolutionary and biogeographic history of the genus Tsuga with an East Asian-North American disjunct distribution

Yuan-Yuan Feng et al.

Summary: The study reconstructed a highly resolved phylogeny of Tsuga using nuclear, chloroplast, and mitochondrial genes, revealing the biogeographic history of the species originating in North America and dispersing to East Asia via the Bering Land Bridge in the middle Miocene. Additionally, a complex reticulate evolutionary pattern among East Asian Tsuga species was discovered, with implications for taxonomic reconsideration.

Biogeography of the monocotyledon astelioid clade (Asparagales): A history of long-distance dispersal and diversification with emerging habitats

Joanne L. Birch et al.

Summary: The astelioid families are mainly distributed in Australasia and temperate Africa, with secondary centers of diversity in Afromontane Africa, Asia, and Pacific Islands. The distribution patterns are believed to be influenced by long-distance dispersal and Tertiary climatic and geological drivers. Australian ancestral ranges were identified for Crown Asteliaceae and Boryaceae, while certain genera in Hypoxidaceae have African origins.

Phylogenomic and ecological analyses reveal the spatiotemporal evolution of global pines

Wei-Tao Jin et al.

Summary: The study investigated the evolution of coniferous forests in the Northern Hemisphere, revealing that 90% of extant pine species originated in the Miocene and that the midlatitude region has served as an evolutionary museum for global pines. Additionally, it was found that topography and aridity index played crucial roles in pine diversification.

Node ages, relationships, and phylogenomic incongruence in an ancient gymnosperm lineage - Phylogeny of Ephedra revisited

Catarina Rydin et al.

Summary: With advancements in scientific knowledge, understanding of plant relationships has greatly improved, although for some groups, it still relies heavily on limited information from the plastid genome. This study aimed to resolve phylogenetic questions using both plastid and nuclear ribosomal data, but instead of providing clarity, it led to new uncertainties and incongruent results in the evolution of the ancient Ephedra lineage. Previous conclusions based on nrITS data were challenged by analyses of the entire plastid genome, indicating the need for further research to unravel the complexities of plant evolution.

Origin and diversification of flax and their relationship with heterostyly across the range

Enrique Maguilla et al.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the origin and diversification of the genus Linum, as well as how heterostyly may have influenced diversification rates and colonization patterns. Most species of Linum diversified in the Western Palearctic, with within-area speciation being the main mechanism. Despite no changes in diversification rates related to reproductive system or geographic areas, colonization of new areas was mainly achieved by monomorphic lineages.

Gene duplications and phylogenomic conflict underlie major pulses of phenotypic evolution in gymnosperms

Gregory W. Stull et al.

Summary: By examining the relationship between various facets of genomic changes and phenotypic evolution in gymnosperms, this study found that pulses of phenotypic innovation are strongly associated with gene duplications and genomic conflict.

Disentangling Sources of Gene Tree Discordance in Phylogenomic Data Sets: Testing Ancient Hybridizations in Amaranthaceae s.l.

Diego F. Morales-Briones et al.

Summary: This study investigates gene tree discordance in the plant family Amaranthaceae s.l. using a combination of methods, revealing potential ancient and rapid lineage diversification in the family leading to unresolved conflicts. The research highlights the challenges of identifying sources of gene tree discordance, particularly with phylogenetic network methods, and underscores the importance of thoroughly testing for multiple sources of conflict in phylogenomic analyses.
