The Extraction of β-Carotene from Microalgae for Testing Their Health Benefits

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: Beta-carotene, an important carotenoid, can be extracted from microalgae and has been found to have biological activities such as promoting lifespan and reducing oxidative stress. However, further studies are needed to explore the health benefits and functional mechanisms of beta-carotene in microalgae extracts.

Influence of Proteins on the Absorption of Lipophilic Vitamins, Carotenoids and Curcumin - A Review

Mohammed Iddir et al.

Summary: Proteins play a significant role as emulsifiers during digestion, facilitating the absorption of lipophilic vitamins, carotenoids, and curcumin. Different proteins may have positive or negative effects on the absorption of these nutrients.

Trends in advanced oral drug delivery system for curcumin: A systematic review

Suchiwa Pan-On et al.

Summary: Although curcumin has health benefits, its clinical application is limited by its poor solubility and stability. Nanocarrier-based drug delivery systems (NDS) are effective in improving curcumin's physicochemical and pharmacological effects. This study reviewed evidence of lipid and polymer-based NDS for oral delivery of curcumin. Most studies found that NDS increased curcumin absorption compared to free curcumin.

In vitro and in vivo study of the enhancement of carotenoid bioavailability in vegetables using excipient nanoemulsions: Impact of lipid content

Kangfei Yao et al.

Summary: Increasing the lipid content of excipient nanoemulsions enhances the bioavailability and bioaccessibility of carotenoids from spinach. Additionally, the polarity of carotenoids plays a role in their bioavailability, with lutein having significantly higher bioavailability than beta-carotene. It is important to consider lipid content when formulating reduced-fat emulsion-based foods to improve the oral bioavailability of hydrophobic nutraceuticals.

Effect of encapsulation on β-carotene absorption and metabolism in mice

Ling Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of encapsulating beta-carotene with whey protein isolate on its translocation, absorption, and metabolism in vivo using a mouse model. Smaller nanoemulsions and nanoparticles improved the absorption of beta-carotene in the small intestine, with nanoemulsions more likely to convert it into Vitamin A and store it in the liver.

Impact of Protein-Enriched Plant Food Items on the Bioaccessibility and Cellular Uptake of Carotenoids

Mohammed Iddir et al.

Summary: The study found that co-digestion of commonly consumed proteins with carotenoid-rich foods can improve the bioaccessibility and cellular uptake of carotenoids, especially in the presence of soy protein isolate (SPI). Meat proteins (turkey and cod) had a weaker impact on carotenoids.
