Apremilast-induced increases in acute ethanol intoxication and decreases in ethanol drinking in mice involve PKA phosphorylation of GABAA 83 subunits

Yuri A. Blednov et al.

Summary: This study found that apremilast affects the behavioral responses to ethanol and certain GABAergic drugs by modulating the phosphorylation of GABAA receptor subunits. In wild-type mice, apremilast increased ataxia induced by ethanol and propofol, and accelerated the recovery from ataxia caused by diazepam. However, these effects were weakened in mice with mutated GABAA receptor subunits. Additionally, apremilast increased the sensitivity to ethanol, decreased acute functional tolerance, and reduced ethanol consumption.

Exogenous GABA improves the antioxidant and anti-aging ability of silkworm (Bombyx mori)

Jie Tu et al.

Summary: The study suggests that GABA has anti-aging potential by playing roles in energy homeostasis, reducing carbo-hydrate and lipid level, increasing anti-oxidative capacity, and regulating mRNA expression of longevity-related genes.

Postbiotic Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid and Camel Milk Intervention as Innovative Trends Against Hyperglycemia and Hyperlipidemia in Streptozotocin-Induced C57BL/6J Diabetic Mice

Amro Abdelazez et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of camel milk as a traditional functional food and the synthesis of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) by Lactobacillus brevis KLDS1.0727 and KLDS1.0373 strains as a potential food additive in the treatment of diabetic complications. The results demonstrate the significant effects of these treatments in reducing blood glucose and lipid levels.

Auxin regulates source-sink carbohydrate partitioning and reproductive organ development in rice

Zhigang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study reveals an auxin signaling cascade regulating carbohydrate partitioning and reproductive organ development in rice. Elevated auxin levels in the rice dao mutant cause altered sucrose accumulation between source and sink tissues, resulting in closed spikelets, indehiscent anthers, and parthenocarpic seeds. The expression of OsARF18 and OsARF2 is significantly affected in the mutant, and their regulation of OsSUT1 contributes to the observed phenotypes.

Response of yield and quality of giant embryo rice to nitrogen application and analysis of lipid-lowering effect

Mingming Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing nitrogen fertilizer can enhance the yield and quality of giant embryo rice and has a positive effect on regulating hyperlipidemia in rats. The optimal nitrogen application rate was found to be 135 kg ha(-1), providing a theoretical and technical foundation for the popularization and application of giant embryo rice in the future.

Prevalence, outcomes, and cost of chronic kidney disease in a contemporary population of 2.4 million patients from 11 countries: The CaReMe CKD study

Johan Sundstrom et al.

Summary: The CaReMe CKD study aimed to estimate the prevalence, adverse outcomes, and costs of chronic kidney disease (CKD) across 11 countries. The study found that the prevalence of CKD is underestimated when relying solely on diagnostic codes, and there is considerable potential in diagnosing and treating CKD to improve public health. CKD patients experience significant adverse events and costs, with renal events and heart failure being more costly than atherosclerotic events.

Targeted mutagenesis of POLYAMINE OXIDASE 5 that negatively regulates mesocotyl elongation enables the generation of direct-seeding rice with improved grain yield

Yusong Lv et al.

Summary: It was found that OsPAO5 gene expression in rice seedlings is enhanced by light and inhibited by darkness. Mutants created using CRISPR/Cas9 technology exhibited longer mesocotyls, released less H2O2, and synthesized more ethylene, resulting in higher and more uniform emergence rate, showing the potential for direct seeding. Knocking out OsPAO5 can significantly increase grain weight, grain number, and yield potential, providing a novel strategy for breeding elite rice varieties for direct seeding.
