Measurement of Minor Element Distributions in Complex Copper Converting Slags Using Quantitative Microanalysis Techniques

Jiang Chen et al.

Summary: The distribution of minor elements in industrial copper converting slag samples was determined using a combination of EPMA and LA-ICP-MS methods. The results showed good consistency with literature data and demonstrated that accurate distributions of minor elements can be obtained by direct measurement of plant samples. The advantages and limitations of using microanalysis techniques for industry slag assay were also discussed.

The potential for copper slag waste as a resource for a circular economy: A review - Part I

Tina Chanda Phiri et al.

Summary: The mining industry faces challenges such as depletion of high-grade deposits, high energy cost for metal production, and environmental concerns associated with mining waste disposal. Copper slag, a major mining waste, is causing growing concern due to its large volumes and waste of valuable metals. Recycling and repurposing of copper slag using innovative technologies can create a resource for a circular economy, addressing these challenges and improving metal production and environmental impact.

Mineralogical and morphological factors affecting the separation of copper and arsenic in flash copper smelting slag flotation beneficiation process

Huihui Zhou et al.

Summary: The separation of copper and arsenic has always been a major issue in the copper slag flotation process, with the presence of arsenic-copper alloys increasing the difficulty of separation, requiring finer grinding. Arsenic is oxidized into arsenate compounds during the process, while the transformation of copper and arsenic speciation affects the selectivity of separation. The study also highlights the risks of heavy metals in FSF slag and its flotation concentrate, emphasizing the need for cautious handling and utilization.

Handling trace elements in WEEE recycling through copper smelting-an experimental and thermodynamic study

Min Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the distribution of trace elements between copper alloy and slags during the recycling process of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The results show that the distribution coefficients of all investigated trace elements between copper alloy and slag increase with decreasing oxygen partial pressure and increasing temperature.

Precious Metal Distributions Between Copper Matte and Slag at High PSO2 in WEEE Reprocessing

Min Chen et al.

Summary: The distribution of precious metals between copper matte and slag was studied at 1300 degrees C and P-SO2 = 0.5 atm. Concentrations of precious metals in matte and slag were analyzed, showing the effects of P-SO2 and selected slag modifiers on precious metal distributions. These results provide experimental thermodynamic data for pyrometallurgical reprocessing of electronic waste via copper smelting processes.

Summary: Depleting and increasingly complex mineral resources present challenges for metal production, particularly in the control of iron oxide fluxing in the raw material basis of non-ferrous metals. The targeted metal values as minority components in the ores lead to more complex slag compositions in smelting furnaces.

Study of the micromorphology and health risks of arsenic in copper smelting slag tailings for safe resource utilization

Liqun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study on slag tailings revealed the presence of arsenic in the form of maghemite and fayalite, with uneven distribution of arsenic-bearing minerals. The evaluation assessed the health risks to children exposed to the tailings, finding no harm to their health, but identified a potential higher hazard index with longer activity time of workers in the tailing workshop. Despite the certain bioavailability of arsenic in the slag tailings, it was not found to adversely impact human health.
