A review of molecular diagnoses of bacterial fish diseases

Mohamed Abdelsalam et al.

Summary: Egypt is one of the world's largest fish producers, but it faces challenges such as massive mortalities in farmed fish and poor biosecurity practices. Molecular techniques offer a sensitive and quick way to identify pathogens, allowing for better disease prevention and protection of consumers from seafoodborne illnesses.

Vibriosis outbreaks in farmed Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) caused by Vibrio mimicus and V. cholerae

Mamdouh Y. Elgendy et al.

Summary: This study investigated the outbreak of V. mimicus in farmed Nile tilapia in Egypt. The pathogen was found to be resistant to multiple antibiotics and caused high mortality. These findings provide a basis for controlling and preventing this disease.

Phenotypic and molecular characterization of the causative agents of edwardsiellosis causing Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) summer mortalities

Mamdouh Y. Elgendy et al.

Summary: Edwardsiellosis is a serious bacterial disease affecting Nile tilapia, and this study isolated Edwardsiella tarda and Edwardsiella anguillarum from diseased fish specimens in Egypt. The identification and virulence properties of the isolates were analyzed, confirming the importance of genetic-based approaches in accurate disease diagnosis and the need for antimicrobial sensitivity testing to improve therapy efficacy.

Coinfections of Aeromonas spp., Enterococcus faecalis, and Vibrio alginolyticus isolated from farmed Nile tilapia and African catfish in Egypt, with an emphasis on poor water quality

Mohamed Abdelsalam et al.

Summary: The study investigated the high mortality rate among Nile tilapia and African catfish poly-cultured in earthen ponds in Manzala, Egypt, which was linked to poor water quality parameters and bacterial infections. Experimental infection showed different bacterial isolates resulted in varying mortality rates for Nile tilapia.

Morpho-molecular identification of Heterophyes heterophyes encysted metacercariae and its immunological and histopathological effects on farmed Mugil cephalus in Egypt

Marwa M. Attia et al.

Summary: This study identified heterophyid encysted metacercariae infecting gray mullets through morphological and molecular assays, showing a higher prevalence in wild-caught fish compared to farmed fish. Gene expression analysis indicated a significant increase in TNF-alpha and IL-10 in infected fish tissues, along with variable histopathological lesions in infected fish sections.

Morphomolecular identification of two trichodinid coinfections (Ciliophora: Trichodinidae) and their immunological impacts on farmed Nile Tilapia

Marwa M. Attia et al.

Summary: This study characterized two Trichodina species infecting farmed Nile tilapia using morphological, molecular, and immunological approaches, identifying Trichodina heterodentata and T. centrostrigeata. Gene expression levels of MHCII beta and CD4 genes were increased during trichodinid infection. Chemicals like potassium permanganate and hydrogen peroxide were successfully verified to control trichodiniasis in a small-scale trial.

Streptococcus, Centrocestus formosanus and Myxobolus tilapiae concurrent infections in farmed Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Alaa Eldin Eissa et al.

Summary: The study on farmed Nile tilapia from a commercial fish farm in Port Said, Egypt, revealed prevalent stress-triggered concurrent bacterial and parasitic infections. Bacteriological, parasitological, and pathological examinations confirmed the presence of Enterococcus fecalis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Centrocestus formosanus, and Myxobolus tilapiae in the sampled fish. The co-infections were likely caused by deleterious environmental conditions.

Characterization of digenetic trematodes infecting African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) based on integrated morphological, molecular, histopathological, and immunological examination

Marwa M. Attia et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the digenetic trematodes species infecting African catfish Clarias gariepinus and their histopathological impacts. Intestinal flukes were identified as Orientocreadium batrachoides and Masenia bangweulensis, while metacercariae trematode infecting skin and muscles was identified as Cyanodiplostomum sp. Gene expression levels of MHC II and lysozyme were found to increase in infected catfish. Histopathological examination revealed embedded parasitic cysts in the skin with infiltration of inflammatory cells in the stomach tissue.
