Carrera unified formulation (CUF) for the micropolar plates and shells. II. Complete linear expansion case

E. Carrera et al.

Summary: In this study, new higher-order models of orthotropic micropolar plates and shells were developed using the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). A complete linear expansion case (CLEC) was considered in detail. The stress and strain tensors, as well as the vectors of displacements and rotation, were presented as linear expansion in terms of the shell thickness coordinates. The equations of the micropolar theory of elasticity were transformed to the corresponding equations for the coefficients of the expansion, and a system of differential equations and natural boundary conditions were obtained. These developed equations can be used for calculating stress-strain and modeling thin-walled structures, considering micropolar couple stress and rotation effects.

Carrera unified formulation (CUF) for the micropolar plates and shells. I. Higher order theory

E. Carrera et al.

Summary: Based on the variational principle of virtual power and generalized series expansion, a new higher order model of orthotropic micropolar plates and shells in orthogonal curvilinear coordinates has been developed. The obtained equations can be used to calculate stress-strain and model thin-walled structures at different scales, taking into account micropolar couple stress and rotation effects.

Static stability and free vibration characteristics of a micro laminated beam under varying axial load using modified couple stress theory and Ritz method

Richa Priyanka et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the buckling and free vibration behaviors of micro laminated composite beams under varying axial loads using the modified couple stress theory, capturing the size effect by considering material length scale parameters and exploring different boundary conditions and layups. The observed size effect is more significant when the beam thickness is similar to the material length scale parameter and diminishes as the thickness increases. Different boundary conditions result in varying small size effect variations, with the fundamental frequency decreasing more rapidly under parabolic loading compared to other loading types.

A Review on the Size-Dependent Models of Micro-beam and Micro-plate Based on the Modified Couple Stress Theory

Shengli Kong

Summary: The article discusses the size-dependent material deformation behaviors of certain metals and polymers at micro scale experiments and how the modified couple stress theory (MCST) can capture these size dependences. It reviews available size-dependent models for micro-beam and micro-plate based on MCST, and establishes relevant mechanical models and solutions for static bending, vibration, buckling, and pull-in instability of representative micro-structures. The results indicate significant size effects on the mechanical properties of micro-structures, suggesting potential further research on size-dependent behaviors.

Carrera unified formulation (CUF) for the micropolar beams: Analytical solutions

E. Carrera et al.

Summary: New higher order models of micropolar beams based on Carrera unified formulation have been developed. The stress and strain tensors, as well as vectors of displacements and rotation, have been expanded into series in terms of cross-section coordinates, allowing for calculations of stress-strain and modeling of thin walled structures at macro, micro, and nanoscale with micropolar couple stress and rotation effects taken into account.

A couple stress model in non-polynomial framework to examine structural responses of laminated composite micro-plates: An analytical solution

Y. S. Joshan et al.

Summary: In this article, couple stress models in the non-polynomial framework are developed and used to examine the structural response characteristics of composite micro-plates. The study considers length scale effects and various shear shape functions to model transverse shear deformation effects, with governing equations formulated using the Hamilton principle and linear structural kinematics. The methodology is applied to analyze bending, free vibration, and buckling responses of the micro-plates, with comparisons made among different plate theories to assess the applicability of various deformation theories in modeling composite micro-plates.
