Learning-based video motion magnification approach for vibration-based damage detection

Ricard Lado-Roige et al.

Summary: This paper explores the viability of using learning-based state-of-the-art video motion magnification to extract vibrational signatures for damage detection in structures. The proposed model uses learning-based video motion magnification to detect subtle sub-pixel movement and achieve greater sensibility to vibration. The experimental results prove that the system is suitable for identifying natural frequencies and operating deflection shapes, enabling reliable structural damage detection algorithms.

Online automatic monitoring of abnormal vibration of stay cables based on acceleration data from structural health monitoring

Min He et al.

Summary: This study proposes a fully automatic method to identify the abnormal vibrations of stay-cables. Quantified feature indices are extracted to characterize vortex-induced vibration, and a feature vector is established to distinguish it from ambient vibration. Utilizing a Minimum Euclidean Distance Classifier and root mean square method, this method avoids manual intervention and can yield accurate and convincing identification results.

A machine learning approach for automatic operational modal analysis

Vezio Mugnaini et al.

Summary: One major application of Structural Dynamics is the dynamic characterization of man-made structures and components. Traditional Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA) is not always convenient, and thus output-only Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) is considered a practical alternative. This study presents an Automatic OMA method based on statistical principles and a Machine Learning clustering approach. The algorithm is tested on a numerical case study and experimental analysis of an Airbus H135 helicopter blade to verify its performance.

Guided waves based damage localization using acoustically coupled optical fibers and a single fiber Bragg grating sensor

Rohan Soman et al.

Summary: Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are considered ideal for structural health monitoring (SHM) due to their small size, light weight, ability to be embedded, and ability to be multiplexed. Recently, there has been renewed interest in using FBG sensors for gravity wave (GW) measurements, with an edge filtering approach that greatly increases sensitivity. This study utilizes the phenomenon of acoustic signal transfer between fibers to develop an SHM system capable of damage localization using a single FBG sensor. The proposed approach has the potential to significantly reduce equipment costs and promote widespread acceptance of SHM systems in structures.

Fast operational modal analysis of a single-tower cable-stayed bridge by a Bayesian method

Y. C. Ni et al.

Summary: This paper presents the operational modal analysis of a single-tower cable-stayed bridge based on data collected from a SHM system. A fast Bayesian FFT method was used to efficiently determine modal parameters and uncertainty. The study investigated the relationship between modal parameters and temperature, and developed a prediction model incorporating 24-hour data to analyze the probability density function of natural frequency and damping ratio for the bridge deck and cables.
