Dynamic micromechanical model for smart composite and reinforced shells

Irene Christofi et al.

Summary: A dynamic micromechanical model based on asymptotic homogenization for smart composite and reinforced shells with piezoelectric and piezomagnetic constituents is developed. The model recovers the unit cell problems to calculate effective coefficients and obtains macroscopic variables through governing equations, leading to asymptotic expansions of all field variables. Highlights of the model include the dependence of effective properties on the shell's curvature, the temporal nature of effective properties, the reflection of all constituent material parameters, and the capture of various properties. The homogenized shell exhibits inhomogeneity or quasi-homogeneity and a memory effect similar to viscoelastic structures.

Forced vibration of piezoelectric and flexoelectric Euler-Bernoulli beams by dynamic Green's functions

Wenhao Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic response of piezoelectric and flexoelectric beams under mechanical loads using Green's functions. Exact solutions for the electromechanical coupling behaviors are derived, showing that the flexoelectric effect can dominate the behavior and be easily detected at microscale. Results suggest that the flexoelectric effect can be strong enough to coordinate with the trend towards miniaturization and can be applied in energy harvesters, sensors, and other fields.

Flexoelectric effects on the natural frequencies for free vibration of piezoelectric nanoplates

Bin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electromechanical coupling responses of nanoplates with both piezoelectric and flexoelectric effects, revealing that the dynamic flexoelectric effect has a significant impact on the natural frequencies. The results show that the dynamic flexoelectric effect is size-dependent, more pronounced with higher vibration mode orders and larger side ratios, and the choice of positive or negative static and dynamic flexoelectric coefficients leads to different effects on the natural frequencies. The influence of the dynamic flexoelectric effect on the natural frequencies is closely related to the plate's side constraint and geometry.

Summary: The study developed a comprehensive micromechanical model for analyzing structurally periodic and fully coupled magnetoelectric and thermoelastic smart composite and reinforced thin shells. By decomposing the model into macroscopic and microscopic problems and solving them separately, it was shown that in the case of a thin elastic shell, the model converges to the classical shell model.

Simple closed-form expressions for the effective properties of multilaminated flexoelectric composites

David Guinovart-Sanjuan et al.

Summary: The study considers a multilayered rectangular flexoelectric structure and derives explicit expressions of the local problems using the two-scale asymptotic homogenization method. Simple closed-form formulas of effective stiffness, piezoelectric, dielectric, and flexoelectric tensors are given, providing information about the symmetry of the homogenized structure. A numerical example is presented for a bilaminate composite with Barium Titanate and Gallium Arsenide constituents, showing flexoelectric properties with tetragonal crystal symmetry after the homogenization process.

Numerical predictions for the effective electrical properties of flexoelectric composites with a single inclusion

Yicong Zheng et al.

Summary: The direct flexoelectricity in dielectrics, as an electromechanical mechanism coupling electric field and strain gradient, exhibits strong size dependence and structures associated. In this paper, the effective electrical properties of particulate flexoelectric composites are predicted by the flexoelectric theory. Depending on the theory of micromechanics homogenization, numerical finite element simulations have been performed for representative volume elements (RVE) of the isotropic matrix filled with a single flexoelectric inclusion, by using mixed variational principle and finite element method (FEM). The electric fields inside the RVE of different inclusion shapes and volume fractions are studied. The influence of length scale on the electrical properties of the composites is discussed. Effective electrical properties of the composites are estimated based on obtained numerical results. It shows that the shape of the inclusion has a great influence on the effective electrical properties of composites with a nano-scale inclusion. The regular octagonal inclusion can provide high electrical performance and effective electrical properties are even twice as large as the spherical inclusion. At the same time, the selection of the length scale will affect the effective electrical properties. Our results suggest that the shape effect of the inclusion on electrical properties of nano-scale dielectric composites should be emphasized.

Topology optimization of flexoelectric composites using computational homogenization

X. Chen et al.

Summary: This study introduces a topology optimization framework for designing piezoelectric composites with enhanced flexoelectric constants. By leveraging a RVE-based computational homogenization approach, it is possible to analyze periodic composites with microstructures significantly smaller than the structure, and optimize a single RVE rather than the entire structure. Significant enhancements in electromechanical couplings are observed in different types of PZT-based composites, reaching improvements up to one order of magnitude larger than BTO.

Summary: A multi-scale variational-asymptotic homogenization method is developed for periodic microstructured materials in presence of thermoelasticity with periodic spatially dependent one relaxation time. The method establishes equivalence between macro-scale and micro-scale equations, leading to efficient computation of the microscopic fields in terms of the macroscopic ones. Results show good agreement with heterogeneous continuum theory.

Additive manufacturing introduced substructure and computational determination of metamaterials parameters by means of the asymptotic homogenization

Bilen Emek Abali et al.

Summary: Metamaterials exhibit a response that deviates from conventional elasticity, captured by introducing additional parameters to extend the theory. When describing materials with a substructure at a microscopic level, introducing extra constitutive parameters is necessary. Asymptotic homogenization can be used to determine these parameters when accurate knowledge of the substructure is available.
