Microstructure and high-temperature tensile behavior of spray-formed modified 2000MPa H13 hot work die steel with 0.5wt % carbon

Hengnan Ding et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the improved high-temperature strength and mechanical properties of hot work die steels using modified SF01 steel. The modified SF01 steel exhibits higher yield strength and lower elongation compared to conventional H13 steel over a wide temperature range. The microstructural characteristics are correlated with the yield strength, and the unsatisfactory toughness of SF01 steel is attributed to the presence of VC.

Microstructure and tempering softening mechanism of modified H13 steel with the addition of Tungsten, Molybdenum, and lowering of Chromium

Hengnan Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, a modified H13 steel (CXN03 steel) with additional tungsten, molybdenum, and lowering chromium was prepared to improve the tempering softening resistance (TSR) of hot work die steels. The results showed that CXN03 steel exhibited significantly better TSR compared to H13 steel, mainly due to the excellent stability of dispersive nano-sized M2C. Recrystallization softening was observed in H13 steel but not in CXN03 steel.

Simultaneous enhancements of strength and ductility of a selective laser melted H13 steel through inoculation treatment

Qiyang Tan et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found that the brittleness and property anisotropy of selective laser melting fabricated H13 tool steel are caused by elongated high carbon gamma thin films between columnar structures. By using TiN nanoparticles as inoculators, the columnar structure can be converted into equiaxed and refined grains, leading to the elimination of property anisotropy and an increase in strength and ductility of the SLM-fabricated H13 steel.

Modeling the effects of grain boundary sliding and temperature on the yield strength of high strength steel

Xi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed a temperature-dependent model of grain boundary sliding energy for high strength steel based on the Force-Heat Equivalence Energy Density Principle. A physics-based model considering the effects of grain boundary sliding and temperature on yield strength was proposed. The theoretical predictions using this model showed good agreement with experimental data, offering a reasonable assessment method for yield strength at elevated temperatures while reducing time and manpower consumption.

Carbon redistribution in quenched and tempered lath martensite

L. Morsdorf et al.

Summary: This study investigates the tempering-induced carbon redistribution in martensitic steels, revealing the formation and dissolution of carbon clusters in the as-quenched state, and the simultaneous precipitation of carbides at carbon-rich dislocation cores during tempering. The dislocation network plays a crucial role as a carbon diffusion path in the process.

Effect of Alloying Elements on the High-Temperature Tempering of Fe-0.3N Martensite

Shao-Wen Young et al.

Summary: The study showed that the addition of Mn, Cr, and Mo can enhance the resistance to temper softening in Fe-N martensite, with Cr and Mo alloys experiencing secondary hardening at higher tempering temperatures. The formation mechanisms of different alloy nitrides were identified through various microstructural observations and chemical analyses.

Characteristics and mechanisms of hydrogen-induced quasi-cleavage fracture of lath martensitic steel

L. Cho et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed characterization of the microstructures and dislocation characteristics beneath hydrogen-induced quasi-cleavage fracture features of an as-quenched martensitic steel. The dominant fracture mode in the hydrogen-affected zones was found to be quasi-cleavage fracture, involving significant plasticity. The sizes, orientations, and boundaries of the martensite constituents influenced the surface morphologies of the quasi-cleavage fractures.

Resistance to Temper Softening of Low Carbon Martensitic Steels by Microalloying of V, Nb and Ti

Yongjie Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the resistance to temper softening in low carbon martensite by microalloying with strong carbide-forming alloying elements (V, Nb and Ti) in an Fe-0.1C-1.5Mn-0.05Si (mass%) alloy. The addition of V, Nb and Ti increased the hardness of tempered martensite, especially after treatment at higher temperatures with longer times. Atom probe measurements showed the formation of nano-sized alloy carbides at 923K, leading to significant secondary hardening, while at 723K, there was no detectable precipitation of V, Nb and Ti. The reduction in dislocation density during tempering was strongly retarded by the additions of V, Nb and Ti, contributing to the resistance to temper softening even without nano-precipitation of alloy carbides.

Different roles of reversed austenite, athermal martensite and tempered martensite on low-temperature toughness in ultra-low carbon medium Mn steel

Danqi Zhang et al.

Summary: The impact energy of 0.02C-7Mn steel at -40 degrees C was strongly influenced by the grain boundary (GB) wetting transition, with lower tempering temperatures leading to embrittlement of GBs and intergranular fracture mode. Tempering between 580 degrees C and 650 degrees C resulted in a ductile fracture mode due to the transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) effect.

Hierarchical Characteristics of Hydrogen-Assisted Crack Growth and Microstructural Strain Evolution in Tempered Martensitic Steels: Case of Quasi-cleavage Fracture

Tingshu Chen et al.

Summary: The study focused on investigating the local plastic strain evolution associated with crack growth in hydrogen-assisted quasi-cleavage fracture using tempered lath martensitic steels. The quasi-cleavage crack growth involved sharp crack initiation and growth, crack deflection/branching, crack tip blunting, and subsequent crack coalescence. Specific correlations were found between hydrogen-assisted cracking behavior and local plastic strain evolution at different spatial scales, with the largest plastic strain evolution occurring in the region where crack coalescence was observed.
