Slip activity during low-stress cold creep deformation in a near-a titanium alloy

Claudius Dichtl et al.

Summary: This study investigated two different bimodal microstructures of near-alpha titanium alloys to shed light on the deformation mechanisms during cold dwell. It was found that basal slip is initially dominant at low stress levels, while prismatic slip increases approaching the yield stress. Additionally, the sample with coarse transformation product exhibited more plastic strain and longer slip traces, indicating higher susceptibility to cold creep deformation.

Microstructure evolution, mechanical properties and high temperature deformation of (TiB + TiC)/Ti-3.5Al-5Mo-6V-3Cr-2Sn-0.5Fe titanium alloy

Jianhui Yang et al.

Summary: The addition of trace (TiB + TiC) reinforcements can minimize deformation steps and reduce costs. Research on the hot deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of the alloy reveals that the flow behavior is similar to other near beta titanium alloys. Different deformation mechanisms are observed in beta and (alpha + beta) regions. Lower strain rates allow for sufficient time for microstructural transformation, while higher strain rates can lead to local flow instability and cracks. Activation energies differ in different regions, and the processing map identifies optimum deformation windows. Additionally, the microstructure of the alloy shows a mix of alpha p, fine acicular alpha s, and continuous alpha GB, resulting in high strength but poor ductility.

Texture evolution and slip mode of a Ti-5.5Mo-7.2Al-4.5Zr-2.6Sn-2.1Cr dual-phase alloy during cold rolling based on multiscale crystal plasticity finite element model

Duoduo Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a multiscale crystal plasticity finite element method of dual-phase alloy based on LS-DYNA software to investigate the texture evolution and slip mode of a Ti-5.5Mo-7.2Al-4.5Zr-2.6Sn-2.1Cr alloy during cold rolling. The results show that the <11<(2)over bar>0>[0001) slip system gradually becomes the main slip mode at lower Schmid factor (<0.2) in the alpha phase. In contrast, the contribution of the <11 (2) over bar3>[10 (1) over bar1] slip system to the overall plastic deformation is relatively limited. For the beta phase, the relative activity of the <111>[110) slip system shows an upward tendency. The calculated pole figures, rotation axes, and compelled rotation behavior are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Rolling reduction-dependent deformation mechanisms and tensile properties in a β titanium alloy

Zhaoxin Du et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between cold rolling reductions and deformation mechanisms, as well as mechanical properties, in the metastable TB8 titanium alloy. The results showed that the crystal orientation of the matrix changed with increasing reduction, leading to the activation of complex deformation mechanisms. Different reduction levels corresponded to different dominant deformation mechanisms, including dislocations, deformation twins, and kink bands. The interaction among deformation twins, kink bands, and other deformation mechanisms during cold rolling refined the matrix, affecting its strength and shape.

Reduction effect of final-pass heavy reduction rolling on the texture development, tensile property and stretch formability of ZWK100 alloy plates

B. Q. Shi et al.

Summary: By subjecting the as-cast billets of ZWK100 alloy to final-pass heavy reduction rolling (FHRR) at different reduction rates, it was found that reductions above 50% favored shear banding formation and led to uniform grain structures with symmetrical 'oblique-line split' texture, resulting in excellent elongation and formability. The formation of the 'oblique-line split' texture was mainly correlated with the preferred growth tendency of grains with special boundaries, contributing to the high stretch formability of the alloy.

Gradient microstructure, recrystallization and mechanical properties of copper processed by high pressure surface rolling

J. Guo et al.

Summary: The microstructure, hardness, and tensile properties of copper processed by high pressure surface rolling (HPSR) were investigated. It was found that HPSR resulted in a gradient structure with significant differences in microstructural features. The deformed microstructure varied from nano- and ultrafine-scale structures near the surface to lightly deformed grains at depths below the surface. Partial recrystallization occurred after annealing, with a more pronounced effect close to the surface. The deformed layer at depths greater than 500 μm remained largely non-recrystallized after annealing.

Microstructure, texture, and mechanical properties of asymmetrically cold-rolled Ni1.5FeCrCu0.5 high- entropy alloy

Saeed Taali et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructural evolution, texture development, and mechanical properties of the cold-rolled and annealed Ni1.5FeCrCu0.5 high-entropy alloy. The results show that the grain size of the annealed samples is significantly reduced by increasing the velocity ratio of the rolls and imposing shear strain. Annealing is also found to promote the formation of annealing twins. The recovery process is accelerated by the increased accumulated shear strain. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the intensity of certain shear texture components is higher in the asymmetrically rolled sheets. The annealing process weakens the strength of the Cube texture component. In terms of mechanical properties, the grain refinement through post-roll annealing enhances the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength, and the sheet drawability is gradually improved by increasing the velocity ratio.

Evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties influenced by nanosized precipitates during rolling deformation

Wei Qian et al.

Summary: Through severe plastic deformation of 6111Al-Er alloy, significant enhancement in performance can be achieved, including increased yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation. This is mainly attributed to the synergistic strengthening effect induced by fine grain strengthening and Orowan strengthening mechanisms. By systematically calculating the competitive relationship between driving force and restraining force, the mechanism of this synergistic strengthening effect is revealed.

Orientation dependent behavior of tensile-creep deformation of hot rolled Ti65 titanium alloy sheet

Zhixin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study on Ti65 titanium alloy sheet revealed anisotropic properties in terms of tensile strength, yield strength, and creep endurance between transverse direction (TD) and rolling direction (RD). The orientation of grains and crack initiation sites also showed distinct differences during the creep process. Factors contributing to this anisotropy include changes in Schmid factors values and differences in creep mechanisms between TD (grain boundary sliding) and RD (dislocation slip). It is important to fully consider the anisotropy of Ti65 sheet to enhance structural efficiency in engineering design and application.

Contribution of ultrasonic surface rolling process to the fatigue properties of TB8 alloy with body-centered cubic structure

Dan Liu et al.

Summary: The ultrasonic surface rolling process (USRP) was found to significantly enhance the fatigue strength of TB8 alloys by creating gradient structure surface layers through multiple passes. However, the improvement in fatigue strength compared to other titanium alloys was limited due to notable surface residual stresses relaxation. Fatigue crack initiation was observed in larger grains on the surface, with subsequent propagation in a mixed transgranular and intergranular mode. Grain growth and reduction in geometrically necessary dislocations value were identified in post-fatigued USRP-treated TB8 samples.

Effect of carbon content on the microstructure and bonding properties of hot-rolling pure titanium clad carbon steel plates

Chao Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that higher carbon content in the steel used in hot-rolling bonding experiments resulted in lower bond strength of the composite plate at 850 degrees C, but thicker TiC layer formed at 1050 degrees C, which hindered Fe-Ti compound formation and increased bond strength. TiC formation on the interface between pure titanium and carbon steel during hot rolling effectively reduced mutual diffusion between Fe and Ti, preventing Fe-Ti compound formation and enhancing bonding strength in composite plates.
