Influence of Si content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of silicon stainless steel

Prince Setia et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of Si addition on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of cast silicon stainless steel alloys, revealing significant changes in microstructure and mechanical properties with varying Si content. Si incorporation improved strength and ductility in primarily austenitic microstructure, but higher Si content led to a duplex structure and reduced ductility. Nanoindentation characterization suggested significant improvements in hardness and modulus of the austenite phase after Si incorporation. Further analysis indicated a correlation between mechanical properties and crystallographic orientation of grains, showing highly anisotropic behavior. Lastly, nanomechanical properties were used to predict bulk mechanical properties with ECM model, highlighting the need for refined models for materials with duplex microstructure.

New insights on cellular structures strengthening mechanisms and thermal stability of an austenitic stainless steel fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion

Thomas Voisin et al.

Summary: The rapid solidification cellular structures in 316L austenitic stainless steels fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion were found to have specific crystallographic orientations in cell walls, which act as barriers to dislocation movement and contribute to material strengthening. Additionally, oxide precipitates confined inside cell walls also enhance the material's strength. Overall, the understanding of these intrinsic characteristics and strengthening mechanisms can help improve the material's thermal stability and high strength.

Revealing relationships between microstructure and hardening nature of additively manufactured 316L stainless steel

Luqing Cui et al.

Summary: The relationship between microstructures and hardening nature of laser powder bed fused (L-PBF) 316 L stainless steel has been studied, showing that the hardness of the alloy is predominantly governed by GNDs. During annealing treatments, the migration of GNDs and the decrease of SSD density play important roles in the hardness variation of the material.

Summary: The study investigates the feasibility of a new hybrid remanufacturing method by integrating LCD with subsequent hot deformation to enhance mechanical properties and reduce hardness variations in the cladding layer. By applying compressive deformation and optimizing process conditions, a high-quality metallurgical joint with improved ultimate tensile strength and yield strength was achieved. A dynamic recrystallization process was observed to be the underlying mechanism for the enhancement in mechanical properties.
