Ambient extrusion induced working hardening and their effect on mechanical properties in AZ31 hot-extrusion bar

Jinhua Peng et al.

Summary: The effect of working hardening on deformation mechanisms and strain hardening behavior was revealed by imposing varying degrees of strain on AZ31 hot-extrusion bars through ambient extrusion. It was found that as the extrusion strain increased, the yield strength increased gradually while the ductility sacrificed. The working hardening had varying effects on different loading directions.

The effect of strain rate asymmetry on the Bauschinger effect: A discrete dislocation plasticity analysis

Zebang Zheng et al.

Summary: This study employs a two-dimensional discrete dislocation plasticity model to investigate the effect of strain rate asymmetry on the Bauschinger effect. The results show that increasing the source density enhances the rate dependence of the Bauschinger effect in obstacle-free specimens, while obstacles reduce the rate dependence. In low strain rate regimes, grain boundaries and obstacles with high activation energies enhance the rate dependence of the Bauschinger effect, suggesting that decreasing the grain size or reducing the activation energy can strengthen the rate dependence.

Twins and grain boundaries-dominated the reverse Bauschinger effect and tension- compression asymmetry

Jinjie Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the tension-compression asymmetry and Bauschinger effect of single and polycrystalline aluminum under different loads using molecular dynamics methods. The results show that both types of aluminum exhibit work hardening under tensile and compressive loads, but the characteristics differ between single and polycrystalline aluminum. Additionally, the tension-compression asymmetry and Bauschinger effect are more pronounced in polycrystalline aluminum, with a reverse tension-compression asymmetry observed. The Bauschinger effect is caused by defects introduced through preloading, and the asymmetry is attributed to different microscopic defects.

Rejuvenation of plasticity via deformation graining in magnesium

Bo-Yu Liu et al.

Summary: This study reports the large plasticity in c-axis compression of submicron magnesium single crystal achieved by a dual-stage deformation. The plastic flow strain-hardens the magnesium crystal to gigapascal level, resulting in the formation of multiple grains. This grain formation rejuvenates dislocation activities and enables large plasticity.

Investigation on the anisotropy of mechanical properties along different orientations of an AZ31 hot-extrusion bar

Jinhua Peng et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the texture-induced anisotropy of magnesium, showing that the microstructure, texture, and mechanical properties vary with the sample direction. Different deformation mechanisms are favored by grains at different angles, with tensile and compression yield planes being fitted by linear and exponential equations, respectively. Mechanical properties and strain hardening anisotropy are discussed through comparative analyses between experimental and calculated results.
