Visco-plastic self-consistent modeling of crystallographic texture evolution related to slip systems activated during machining Ti-6AL-4V

Qingqing Wang et al.

Summary: The interconnection between texture variation and the activations of slip systems in machining of Ti-6AL-4V was explored using orientation imaging microscopy (OIM) and visco-plastic self-consistent (VPSC) framework. It was found that the combination of prismatic, basal, pyramidal, and 2nd order pyramidal slip systems induces the generation of C shear texture, with the activation of the 2nd order slip system playing a significant role. This finding is crucial for controlling texture variation in the deformation of Ti-6AL-4V.

Summary: This study presents a newly developed experimental test setup for the direct measurement of the primary shear zone in metal cutting through optical measurements and a novel double-frame technique. The method allows for precise determination of chip speed and maximum shear strain rate under 18 different cutting conditions, with high-quality results suitable for a wide range of applications.
