Mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of cryogenic pre-strained 316LN stainless steel

Shanshan Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanical properties of 316LN stainless steel under different temperature and cryogenic pre-strain conditions. Cryogenic pre-strain improves the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and microhardness of the material, while decreasing elongation. All samples exhibit ductile fracture, with dislocation promoted by cryogenic pre-strain and hindered by low temperatures.

A crystal plasticity model that accounts for grain size effects and slip system interactions on the deformation of austenitic stainless steels

Dylan Agius et al.

Summary: This study incorporates length scale dependence into classical crystal plasticity simulations to ensure a more accurate representation of meso-scale and macro-scale deformation. By adjusting the critical resolved shear stress and slip transfer between grains, the micro-mechanisms near the grain boundaries are effectively incorporated into the simulations, enhancing the predictions of local deformation.

Evaluation of strain-induced martensite formation and mechanical properties in N-alloyed austenitic stainless steels by in situ tensile tests

C. Quitzke et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of nitrogen content on the mechanical properties and strain-induced alpha'-martensite formation behavior of austenitic stainless steel. The results showed that as nitrogen content decreases, the volume fraction of alpha'-martensite formation and the triggering stress both decrease. Microstructure analysis revealed a transition in deformation mechanisms from Transformation Induced Plasticity to Twinning Induced Plasticity behavior with increasing temperature. Additionally, the steel with 0.19 wt.% nitrogen demonstrated the highest tensile strength and excellent total elongation at room temperature compared to other examined steels.

Enhancing combined cryogenic mechanical properties of metastable austenitic stainless steel by warm forming

Qunjie Lu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the cryogenic properties of warm-formed 530408 metastable austenitic stainless steel, showing a decrease in SIM content and dislocation density, as well as an improvement in cryogenic ductility and impact toughness. Despite a decrease in strength, warm-forming can significantly enhance the combined mechanical properties at cryogenic temperatures compared to cold-forming.
