Simultaneous capturing of mixed contaminants from wastewater using novel one-pot chitosan functionalized with EDTA and graphene oxide adsorbent

Monu Verma et al.

Summary: In this study, a one-pot process was used to functionalize chitosan with graphene oxide and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid for the simultaneous capture of toxic inorganic and organic contaminants from wastewater. The prepared adsorbent showed excellent adsorption capacity and reusability, making it a promising method for treating co-existing toxic contaminants in water.

Removal of europium, cobalt and strontium from water solutions using MnO(OH)-modified diatomite

Dmitry Sofronov et al.

Summary: The paper discusses the research on new materials based on MnO(OH)-modified diatomite for sorption of Eu, Co, and Sr from aqueous solutions. The modified diatomite particles showed increased sorption capacity towards heavy metals, with efficiency reaching up to 95% and 98% at pH between 4 and 8. The study demonstrated that higher concentrations of MnO(OH) on diatomite surfaces led to higher sorption capacities for the targeted metals.

Separation of Radionuclides from a Rare Earth-Containing Solution by Zeolite Adsorption

Deniz Talan et al.

Summary: The demand for rare earth elements in industry calls for new or alternative sources, with studies showing the feasibility of using coal and its byproducts. However, the presence of radioactive materials like thorium and uranium in the mineralization poses environmental and health concerns, highlighting the urgency in their removal for producing high-purity rare earths. This study focused on experimental design to investigate the impact of various factors on the removal of thorium and uranium from solution, ultimately achieving optimal separation performance for rare earths.

Recovery and purification of rare earth elements from wastewater and sludge using a porous magnetic composite of β-cyclodextrin and silica doped with PC88A

Francois Nkinahamira et al.

Summary: The synthesized PCDP-M-SHM composite showed excellent rare earth element (REE) recovery performance, achieving quantitative desorption of adsorbed REEs using dilute acidic solutions, and selective purification of REEs from synthetic solutions and industrial wastewater with enrichment factors ranging from 10 to 30. The separation factor confirmed the effectiveness of PCDP-M-SHM to recover REEs from digested sludge with much higher distribution coefficients than coexisting elements. These results suggest that the synthesized adsorbent is a promising solution for REEs separation and purification from water.

An ambient pressure method for synthesizing NaY zeolite

Jiayuan Wang et al.

Summary: Zeolites, important industrial materials in heterogeneous catalysis, are synthesized using a facile ambient pressure technique in this study to produce NaY zeolite. The use of a glass tube as a reactor and a fluid sealant helps create a physical barrier between the reactor contents and the atmosphere, leading to improved yield and safety. Optimal conditions for highly crystalline zeolite synthesis were determined, along with the identification of PEG6000 as the best organic template for improving porosity while maintaining high crystallinity.
