Swelling resistance of an austenitic stainless steel with uniformly distributed nanosized NbC precipitates under heavy ion irradiation

Ji Ho Shin et al.

Summary: The void swelling behavior of a newly developed austenitic stainless steel (ARES-6) with uniformly distributed nanosized NbC precipitates and commercial 316 stainless steel was evaluated using heavy ion irradiation. The results showed that ARES-6 exhibited nearly seven times less swelling compared to 316 stainless steel. The presence of NbC precipitates and high Ni content contributed to the improved swelling resistance of ARES-6, but the dissolution of nanosized NbC precipitates during irradiation could explain the discrepancy between estimated and observed swelling resistance of ARES-6.

Role of δ-ferrite in fatigue crack growth of AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel

Qiyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of delta-ferrite in fatigue crack growth under solution treated and accelerated aged conditions. It is found that the fatigue crack growth resistance is higher in samples containing delta-ferrite under solution treated conditions. However, a significant deterioration of fatigue crack growth resistance is observed in the delta-ferrite containing samples after accelerated aging treatment.

Revealing the cryogenic-temperature toughness and deformation mechanisms in high manganese austenitic steels

Jie Tang et al.

Summary: High-Mn austenitic steels are promising structural metallic materials for cryogenic-temperature industries due to their good properties and economy. In this study, the cryogenic-temperature toughness and deformation mechanisms were investigated. The results showed that an appropriate gamma SFE level was essential for their low temperature toughness. The plastic deformation mechanisms depended on stacking fault energy and accumulated strain or dislocation density levels simultaneously. Twinning-induced plasticity mechanism was found to contribute to good toughness at room temperature, while enhanced TWIP mechanism was observed at low temperature. Various martensite phases and changes in dislocation density were also identified.

Failure analysis of the TP347H austenitic stainless steel tube of boiler reheater in a coal-fired power plant

Zhunbei Zheng et al.

Summary: The failure mechanism of TP347H stainless steel tube in the boiler reheater of a coal-fired power plant is mainly attributed to long-term overheating, second phase precipitation, coarsening along the grain boundary, and the formation of high content of deformation induced martensite (DIM) structure.

Mechanical properties and fracture behaviors of medium-Mn steels with and without delta-ferrite for different intercritical annealing times

Zheng Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that when the annealing time is short, the product of strength and elongation (PSE) of 0.6Si is slightly lower than that of 0Si; however, when the annealing time is long, the PSE of 0.6Si is significantly higher than that of 0Si. Additionally, microcracks in 0Si mainly originate at the gamma(alpha')/alpha interface, while microcracks in 0.6Si propagate along the (gamma(alpha') + alpha)/delta interface, resulting in different fracture patterns.

Role of applied stress on the changes of precipitation and phosphorus segregation behavior in a TP347H austenitic stainless steel

Chang-Wan Hong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of applied stress on the precipitation behavior in TP347H austenitic stainless steel, specifically focusing on Nb-rich MC and Nb-rich M2P, as well as the role it plays in phosphorus segregation at grain boundaries. The results show different precipitation behaviors in different sections of the test specimens under stress, which in turn affect the phosphorus segregation at grain boundaries.
